Upgrade memory or swap HDD with SDD

Hello,

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro with 4GB of memory. I am thinking of replacing the HDD with a SDD, and debating if a RAM memory upgrade to 8 or 16 GB would bring in any additional perceivable significant performance improvements.

Thanks

What do you want to know?

the mid 2010 MBP has a sata 3GBps connector. the fastest sata SSDs are 6GBps.

All of them are one step down compatible, most even two steps.

You will hardly notice the difference in speed in case of one step down, because the accesses are not really contiguous.

Much more important is that you have enough free space on the SSD, because that is used by the Garbage Collection in the SSD controller: a good functioning GC is necessary to keep the writing speed fast.

Note: you should avoid setting the Trim command, the warning of Apple when using the trimforce command in Yos 10.10.4 is a real warning.
