Creating playlists when loop recording virtual instruments.

I want to mark a region with a loop and record the section, then go back and try it again. After I've done it several times, I would then have a playlist and would choose the best one. This is how it used to work in the old garageband, and it still does with real instruments. BUT with virtual instruments, instead of creating a playlist it keeps recording onto the same region. In other words, the second time through I'm layering on top of the first region instead of creating a new one. Is there some way to switch things around so that I can have each time through be a separate region instead of layering it all on one region? This is fairly hard to explain. I hope it makes sense.

open GB's prefs and in the General pane uncheck the tickyBox labeled "automatically merge software instruments"

(btw, the previous version of GB worked the same way)
