To Loner T... We were talking earlier about me getting Windows on my Mac Yosemite (2009)...

Hey Loner T,

Our conversation apparently timed out earlier & I wasn't allowed to post any more... I hope you can still help me...I'm SO CLOSE to completing this ongoing nightmare of a task!! As of right now, I've cleared out my "trash" and I still only have 36.82 GB of free space on my start up disc. You suggested I allocate at least 100 GB to Windows when I partition (which is the step I am at...) Is there a way I can use another HD (an external one) to install Windows on? Or does it HAVE to be my internal HD/start up disc??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I'm currently restoring from OS X recovery via external HD. It's now saying it's going to take "3 hours and 6 minutes to transfer to information from my internal HD to my Mac"... Is this normal?? And if so (hopefully!!) what's my next step?

You are restoring OS X Recovery contents to an external HD, not to your internal OS X partition, correct?

Correct! I'm restoring to my external HD with at least 300 GB of available space. That's the one I "clicked" on. Is it supposed to take this long?

I wish I could figure out how to screen shot you a photo. I'm currently messaging you from my husbands PC while my Mac is rebooting/installing/restoring...

What should I do?

We just need to ensure the destination disk has enough space to handle the restore. The Grey disks would have made it much quicker.

The speed of restore is dependent on the connection of the external disk to the Mac. USB2/FW400 are slower and comparable. USB3/FW800 would be quicker/better. If you had a second Mac, it would have been the best solution.
