iChat (Messages) not working properly. (Face Palm)

We use iChat (Messages) extensively to communicate between several of us. We have noticed that we can no longer simply click the video chat option as it simply hangs then errors. Additionally, we cannot drag and drop files as those hang as well (show a static bubble) on the other end. So we switch to the cellular side and send files that way and have to leave the app entirely to FaceTime which is a total pain. The convenience of having it native on all our devices wants me to resolve the issue but if I can't I need to use Skype.

Things we CAN do:

We can text from Mac to Mac

We can video chat (ONLY on the same LAN) not externally

Things we CANNOT do:

We cannot CMD+CNTRL+SHFT+4 and paste into Messages

We cannot drag and drop files into Messages

We cannot send video files via messages

we cannot video chat outside of the LAN

* In order to do this we go into messages and select the users cell number and then drop files. However this chews up data thanks (verizon) and it still does not let us video chat.

Any insights?

Same here - it seams like anything that has to do with AIM or anything outside of simple texting back and forth within Messages/iChat doesn't work. We can video chat via FaceTime but that's it (and only 1 on 1 video chat). We can no longer do any conference video chats via Messages/iChat. It seems like it started intermittently working and not working for a bit then stopped working all together. It's ridiculous because I remember this was a top highlight of a past Keynote when Apple introduced it - connect with person A and invite person B to do a 3-way video chat. I called Apple Support and spoke with them for about an hour before she finally got in touch with their 2nd Tier support. She originally told me you can do conference video chat in FaceTime (on the Apple desktop app), that "there should be a menu option to invite someone else" - which there isn't. She came back from level 2 support and she said "we no longer support video chat via Messages and no longer support conference video chat". I don't get why they wouldn't support it and still have the options within Messages to start video chat and screenshare (which she also said they no longer support lol). It doesn't make sense to me.

Hi,

The Level 2 person is wrong.

There are two issues.

All AIM and Jabber Accounts doing Video and Audio chat are connected using the SIP protocols though a dedicated server run by Apple called SNATMAP.

They work for LAN based conversation using either the Bonjour or the AIM and Jabber options to another computer on your LAN (You have already opened the path to SNATMAP).

It is the bit to the other end user when they are somewhere else on the Internet.

You do NOT get a log if the SNATMAP Server is unavailable or has some issue where it cannot respond (Like being turned Off)

FaceTime does use the same Ports but does not use the SNATMAP server to do Video or Audio Chats.

In AIM and Jabber accounts a Screen Share is an Audio Chat with a VNC connection linked to it so needs the SNATMAP Server.

On the File Sending this, at least with AIM seems to be to do with sending corrupt pictures in the open.

Try sending items in a folder as this seems to automatically Zip them and this seems to get around the issue.
