According to Wikipedia:

The name calorie is used for two units of energy.

  • The small calorie or gram calorie (symbol: cal) is the approximate amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius at a pressure of one atmosphere.[1]
  • The large calorie, kilogram calorie, dietary calorie, nutritionist's calorie, nutritional calorie, Calorie (capital C)[2] or food calorie(symbol: Cal) is approximately the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. The large calorie is thus equal to 1000 small calories or one kilocalorie (symbol: kcal).[1]

First, almost all instances where "calories" or "Calories" are used to describe the amount of energy in food, or the amount of energy expended by a person, the unit is in kilocalories -- the "1 degree Celsius increase in temperature of 1 kilogram of water at some temperature I forget" -- variety.

By convention, a "food calorie" will be written with a capital "C", except that everyone seems to have forgotten that one anyway, and a "chem or physics lab calorie" will be written with a little "c", and they are much pickier.

And there you have it. Regardless of which "c" or "C" the apps use, it's a food or exercise [Cc]alorie and the amount of energy need to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius.
