Unable to END phone calls on 4S

My iPhone 4S, iOS 8.3, has lost the ability to end a phone call. When I try to hit the "end call" button the screen goes black. I try to end the call by pressing in the area of the "end call" button but it doesn't work. The only way I can see that I'm still on the phone is when I press the home button, but I am still unable to hang up! I have turned it completely off and then on again with no different results. Please help me!

Okay so I searched the Internet and evidently this is a problem with the "proximity sensor" (whatever that is)? When I removed my Otterbox Defender protective cover I didn't have any more black screen and the phone worked normally. But I'm confused why it causes a problem at all. I've been using the Otterbox for quite some time with no problems. (I'm also really surprised that no one responded to my cry for help 😕.) After so much frustration I finally managed to put something in the browser that triggered a bunch of videos about just this problem.

Sorry that no one responded to you, I had not seen your earlier message but did catch this one. If no one responds in the future just bump it like you did now.

I used to have an OtterBox and did not have any problems so I cannot explain it from that end.

Try a forced restart. It will not hurt anything at all and it tends to solve a lot of issues. This is a long shot but worth trying as there is nothing to lose by doing so other than 1 minute. Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it comes up. You will not lose any data or apps.

Thank you for your reply. I tried forced restart like you suggested but it did not solve the problem. Moving my Otterbox Defender cover around a little bit DID work. So, at least in my case, the cover appears to be the problem. I may clip off the little section like the You Tube videos suggested or just buy a new Otterbox cover.
