Select Text too easy to fatfinger

When I select text on my iPhone or iPad mini, the selection detector has way too many false positives for selecting the whole word or phrase, whereas I want to select arbitrary characters (I'm a coder). This happens a lot in Wunderlist, where there isn't much screen real estate for showing text in the first place.

How can we lower the detection rate (or disable altogether) phrase selection in text fields?
