thoroughly washed son's iPhone 6 plus

Removed promptly and put in rice. It was completely drained of any battery power prior to going into washing machine, probably went through half of the wash cycle with some sheets, is there any hope? I am unable to power it up and need to understand my options.

Please make an appointment at the Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar and take it in for service. If you are not in the USA or cannot set up an appointment this way, then contact your local Apple Store directly.


If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken


Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.


ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.


You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

If you have AppleCare+ for the phone you can probably get it replaced for a smaller flat fee. I believe that still includes two non-warranty incidents. Normally I consider extended warranties a money-making grab for companies, particularly since for most it is just an extension of the normal warranty and my credit card automatically does that (you may wish to check what coverages you may get since they may be there but not well-advertised). For certain more, uh, risk prone sections of the population such as sons for whom a parent still does their laundry it may be worth considering AppleCare for future delicate technology purchases.


If you try the rice trick it needs to be there several days at least. Do not switch it on to test!


Top loader or side loader? Seriously! Tub loaders would probably mean constant, complete immersion.

Presumably, but LifeProof will not guarantee the device (I don't think). They sell a lot of cases, but i have seen more than a few complaints about failure over the years. Read the fine print carefully.

Hahaha! Yes! I still do my sons laundry and he just turned 13 so it's time for him to learn that skill. I just found the original packaging for his phone which has the serial number so I will check to see if we have Apple+ but I doubt it. Like you we typically don't get extended warranties.


It was a high efficiency, front load washer! Do you think that makes a difference? I put it right into a bag of rice within 30 minutes of finding it. It remained there for 4 days then I plugged it in to charge it. Unfortunately, I did try to power it on and got nothing😟. So I put it back in the rice. Ugh.

That long in water, it is likely toast. However, you might research some local non-apple affiliated shops. We have on here called Cell Phone Repair (CPR) that offers to open the phone up and attempt a water damage repair and does charge if they are unable to repair it. I recently used them - my wife sent her iPhone 5 swimming in a bucket of water - they were no table to repair and didn't charge (instead I picked up a used 4s to tide her over until the next models come out. We're due for replacements anyway). However, as far as local shops go, YMMV. I'd recommend checking for online reviews and asking them specific questions about policy before committing to anything.

No. Sim card sizes will be different between an iPhone 6 and iPhone 4s and earlier. You can go out and buy a sim card adapter to make the nano sim card from an iPhone 6 fit into an iPhone 4s or earlier.
