Q: BOOTCAMP shows up in startup disk preferences but not showing up in bootloader when holding option key.

Hello,

Late 2012 27inch iMAC.

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.4 on an external SSD.  This is working fine.

I also have an internal HDD which contains an old install of Yosemite and a BOOTCAMP install of Windows 7 which now doesn't seem to work.

I cannot boot into bootcamp anymore. (I think it stopped working when I created a new partition on the HDD for time machine)

The bootcamp drive does not appear in the bootloader when I hold the option key on startup.

HOWEVER the bootcamp drive DOES appear in the startup disk pref pane (this happened when I deleted TUXERA NTFS).

When I try to restart into the bootcamp drive from the startup disk pref pane I get the following error in DOS:

bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key

Here's the readout from rEFIT (an app someone told me I should download):

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

    1. Please post the output of

         sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s3 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

This will show the first block of the header.

    2. Has your Windows partition ever been re-sized?

    2) As far as I can remember I don't think I ever resized the windows partition directly.  However, when I started using the external SSD for my Yosemite install and startup disk, I remember creating a THIRD partition for time machine on the HDD...  I also deleted the old yosemite install that was on the "Mac HD" partition. (I recently reinstalled Yosemite on there).  So until recently there was 3 partitions on the internal HDD:

Mac HD (where I used to have my Yosemite install but this was deleted at one stage)

Time Machine (a new 3rd partition - which I deleted yesterday)

    Win HD (bootcamp)

(In that order on disk utility)

    Hope this helps,

    THanks so much!

    Best,
    James

Let us try the simpler fix first. Please ignore the i386 MBR error, but not any others.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    p

    setpid 3

    07

    flag 3

    p

    w

    y

    Reboot and test.

Attempted this, restarted, held down option, windows drive appeared (GREAT!).  Tried to boot to windows, got to windows 7 login screen.

    Confronted with startup repair window:

Hung here for a half hour.

Any ideas? Was I too impatient?

Many thanks for all your help on this,

    All the best,

    Hello Loner T!

I stopped after half an hour or so to come back here and ask whether you think it's worth leaving it for longer repairing?

Shall I try again and leave it overnight?

    Thanks!

Half an hour is excessive. You can read logs on the Windows partition from the OSX side.

Can you look for the log in

    Startup Repair Log

After Startup Repair has run, a text log with diagnostic information and repair results is generated. This log file is located at %WINDIR%\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt.
