Is it possible to use the fingerprint scanner for logging into compatible apps and for the app store etc without having a lock on my keypad? I don't mind having a passcode but I don't want to have to enter it every time I unlock my phone. is that possible? thanks

Yes, that is how Touch ID is supposed to work. Read Use Touch ID on iPhone and iPad - Apple Support.
