Keyboard shortcut for typing up/down arrow symbols?

I want to create keyboard shortcuts for inserting up/down arrow symbols into text, like this: ↑ ↓

What's the best way to do that? I have Spark, and tried creating a text keystroke in that app, but it doesn't seem to recognize the arrows and won't work.
