Ipod touch 5th generation unresponsive

My Ipod touch 5th generation which is maybe only two years old is mostly unresponsive to touch. the screen will still turn on when I press the sleep button but the slider will not respond to my touch so I cannot unlock it. I still get alerts and the alarm still go's off. I also have a virtual home button and some functions still work when I tap it, like Siri, but nothing else will respond. I cant force reset because of the home button being broken. I was playing a game when it happened. The screen froze so I exited the game with the virtual home button and I was able to exit the game but it was still frozen as I could not open any other apps. I pressed the sleep button the pressed it again and the lock screen came up but I can not slide the bar over to unlock it and I cant slide the bar over to turn it off. Any suggestions on what I can do? I would really rather not have to do a factory restart if I can avoid it. Also I have a screen protector on it and was wondering if that could have anything to do with it? Though it has never caused problems before and I have had it on ever since I got the ipod so I don't see how it could all of the sudden cause it to become unresponsive. Also I am not sure of the specific version number of the ios but I just recently updated it to ios 8.

Yes, try removing the screen protector.

Next try restoring the iPod via iTunes. First from backup and then to factory settings/new iPod.

If you have problems restoring:

- If you get an error message what was the message?- If it asks you to enter the passcode place the iPod in Recovery mode using the instructions here:

See my first reply on page 3 in this discussion. The link opens to page 3.

Turn on without Home/Power Button

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem besides the buuton and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

To restore from backup see:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
