Control Sound of External Display

How do I control the sound of my external monitor connected via HDMI? When I go to System Preferences and select the external monitor, I am not able to adjust the volume. When I make my Macbook's speakers the default output, I am able to control sound. Someone suggested downloading a program called Soundflower to solve this but I find this silly. So, Mac/OSX doesn't allow you to adjust an external monitor's sound? This can't be......please help.

You're absolutely right, in short and simple, OSX doesn't allow that.

I'm connected via display port/thunderbolt, and the only way to change the volume on my external monitor is on the monitor itself. The real "funny" thing is that when I boot up Windows 10 (via Bootcamp on the same Macbook and the same external monitor)... it works! The volume keys actually do change the volume on the external monitor, and even give the visual feedback on the monitor (like in OSX). It's just like turning off the Macbook screen when you're connected to external display. If you don't want it on, you can close the lid (good luck with heat then) or you can mess with "sudo's" in terminal and follow the proper procedure every time you reboot (if you don't it turns on again). In Windows you just select "display on screen x only".

After 15 years on Apple machines Apple's "user friendliness" still never ceases to amaze me. ➖
