windows file sharing user checkbox issue

I have a new Macbook Air, and am wanting to complete the 'file sharing' process to include Windows File Sharing but when I go to 'options' after turning file sharing 'on', the checkbox next to my name that I should select to turn 'on' is unselectable - nothing happens when I click on it so I cannot set up a password for the other computer to complete sharing.

Can anybody help? I am new to the Mac world but think I have followed all the steps I have found to enable printer and file sharing process, and the windows computer can see me, just cannot connect until I can complete the password part on the Mac

I am running yosemite 10.10.5

iPhone 6, iOS 8.1

I haven't had that problem... Have you added a folder to be shared before clicking on options?

It could be an artifact of posting it here, but it doesn't look like your SMB/AFP user Account is "ON."

Do you wish to share out your home folder (i.e. log in as you from Windows), or do you want to share other files.

I'm pretty sure that checkbox is only needed if you want to share out your entire home folder (or access it from a Windows computer as you).

where do I locate that to do this? Both boxes are checked in this example.

On my Mac, the user account name is "checked" in the blue square under "On."

Do you have a password set for that account?

And confirm you want other network users to have full access to everything in your Home folder?

actually this has stemmed from simply wanting to share my printers with the other household user (windows) which also so far hasn't worked despite having the shared option for them both on - the closest I got was with the file sharing where my Mac picked up the windows computer but I couldn't then create a password to complete that process

I feel like the windows laptop isn't 'seeing' the Mac

We are both connected to the internet via the same router at home.

Can anybody help me check settings to make sure I am visible and can get at least the printers shared properly?

I was having this issue this morning, and couldn't seem to find any help online. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but my account's password was linked to my iCloud, and once I unlinked it and set a computer-specific password for my User, the box became active and I could check it. You can change your password settings in the Users and Groups section of the Settings menu. Hope this helps.
