remove Mac Cleaner

I just updated to OS 10.10.5 on my iMac and Advanced Mac Cleaner suddenly appeared on my Dock. I have read that this may be a troublesome application in general. I am concerned that it appeared uninvited during what I thought was a standard, prompted update process. They have an uninstaller download that requires my logon password. I do not feel comfortable with any of their resources. I have removed any associated files in the standard manner. Any advice or precautions you can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help Linc. I wonder if you can help me out with the last few steps? I've taken screenshots of the files within

'~/Library/LaunchAgents' and '/Library/LaunchAgents' and '/Library/LaunchDaemons'.

Now what happens? Should I be posting the screenshots in this reply?

Also, I'm confused about these steps:

Step 4

Open the Safari preferences window and select the Extensions tab. If any extensions are listed, post a screenshot. If there are no extensions, or if you can't launch Safari, skip this step.

Step 5

If you use the Firefox or Chrome browser, open its extension list and do as in Step 4.

If you, or anyone else could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!

Installing the "malwarebytes" product and using the "malwarebytes" product are two very different things.

you must manually execute malwarebytes in order for it to run, it will not defend against malware, it will remove it if it finds it. It is not a resident application like Anti-Virus using computing power to act a watch agent against threats at the expense of system resources.

While I and others would not disagree with the current observation that Mac Anti-Virus is not necessary or without its share of problems the statement that this particular product (malwarebytes) is useless has been repeatedly shown as a singularly flawed assessment on these forums. Malwarebytes has been used by IT Professionals, Apple Certified Service Centers and Apple Technicians as a tool for the removal of malware on the mac. Additionally it has a history as a highly recommend product on a number of Windows forums for the same reason. The vast majority of us here who have either fallen prey to mac malware or answered a post regarding it have seen the effectiveness of the particular product firsthand, and while I don't ask you take any single assessment as the final word in security you are welcome to read these forums and make form your own opinion based on the recommendation of Malwarebytes and the outcome from the posters experiencing issues.

my point exactly. Unless they want to spend time on the phone with you causing more problems I would be inclined to think they are on to something by recommending it. Like I said, I won't use any AV on the Mac, but I have used this and recommended it and personally had good results. I've also used it for years on PC's I administered and it was effective. It's not AV and doesn't run like AV.
