Faces, find all untagged faces Photos

This was an iPhoto feature is which one could set up a criteria to view unconfirmed faces.

Any idea on how to do this in the new Photos app?

As a possible workaround

Set up a smart album with person contains <letter>

  1. Create a smart album
  2. Create a rule for "Person" -> "does not include" -> "a"
  3. Repeat for each letter of the alphabet
  4. Add a rule for photos tagged with some phrase that allows you to exclude them, I created and used a tag called "No People" and assigned it to photos that didn't have any people in them so they didn't show up.

There's a screenshot of my rule below. One drawback of this approach is it will exclude photos with multiple people in them if any of the people are named, I have approx 40 000 photos in my library and the smart album opens in less than 1 second.

Alternate approach

  1. Create a normal album and call it something like "Named"
  2. Select "People" album in the sidebar, and then select all
  3. Drag the selected people into the "Named" album
  4. Create a smart album with a rule "Album" -> "is not" -> "Named".

This will be quicker initially than the first option above, but with the drawback that you'll need to recreate the "Named" album once you've assigned names to the photos in the smart album, whereas the first option takes more time to set up initially but will then be a smart album without a static element that needs manual updating.

Hope this helps, and let's hope apple addresses this functionality deficit soon.

Whoziz is only attached to a face temporarily. After tagging unknown faces with it, I immediately go to the Whoziz face group and review the tags - either renaming them correctly, or telling Photos to ignore them. When finished, the Whoziz face group is empty until the next upload. It is strictly a temporary measure so I can pull up the picture full size, rather than try to identify a face from a tiny thumbnail.

I create a 'dummy' name, like 'Whoziz". I assign that name to each face I can't identify from the tiny thumbnail. Then, go to the 'Faces' page, and select the 'Whoziz' face. Then, double-click on the first pic in that group. You'll get a full-sized display of the pic, where you can either rename it to the right person, or click the "x" to remove the name circle from someone/something you don't care to identify. Press the right arrow, scroll to the next pic, and work your way through all the pix, either correctly naming them or telling Photos to ignore.

There are several ways in Photos to view unconfirmed Faces:

  • Open the Faces album from the Sidebar. At the bottom you will see a row of unconfirmed faces. Click the ones you want to name.
  • Enlarge a photo and enable "Show Face Names" in the "View" menu. Now you will see the unnamed faces overlayed on the photo.
  • Or click one of the faces in the Faces album to see more faces of the person that need naming.

There is no way however to search for photos with unnamed faces.

Thanks for the input. It can be done but very tedious.

Working with the faces at the bottom, there are several issues. One, unable to open the photo containing the face - many times I need to do this to better understand the contest of the photo. Another appears to be the inability to select multiple photos to either ignore or apply a name.

If I am missing a technique do let me know.

Unfortunately it is still so tedious. Because the thumbs at the bottom of the Faces album don't allow to see the context of a face, I use this view only to weed out the obvious strangers..

  • I name the faces of persons that are quite clear without enlarging the photo.
  • I delete the faces that are definitely strangers in a crowd.

Then I quit Photos to force it to update the library and now I start from the named faces thumbnails in the Faces album and name all suggested faces for a person. This view allows to see the full photos. All other photos I'll name when I come across empty faces labels when browsing photos enlarged.

Very tedious indeed.

I scrolled through the unnamed faces at he bottom and Photo has over 200 images, which cannot be grouped. Many are faces from crowd photos.

I hope Apple improves this with future updates. BTW - I did report this to Apple as an app improvement.

It appears the Google Picasa is easier to deal with than Apple Photos.
