How do I record my voice and my acoustic guitar with my only mic?

I have a Samson Meteorite USB microphone and I am trying to record my voice and acoustic guitar at the same time with GarageBand. The problem is that GarageBand either picks up my voice well and the guitar is slightly muffled or vice versa. I would like to have the guitar sound clear and un-muffled as well as my voice. Any tips or solutions?

Hello there Pforster,

It sounds like the microphone you're using seems to be picking up either your voice or your guitar clearly but not both when you are singing and playing at the same time. In situations like these the acoustics of the room and position of the microphone are going to be key. In order to help make the recordings more consistent and balanced you will need to move the microphone to different positions and experiment with different distances from it to see about getting the best sound.

I know you said you wanted to record them both at the same time, but it really may be best to do the recording in two tracks so you can adjust the levels of each independently and ensure the best sound quality of both.
