Took me one article to find they use an electronic shutter and not a mechanical one. They have to have some type of shutter.
Apple has used a cameras from more than one source during the lifetime of their devices.
It is easy to time the artificial shutter sound (which is required by law in some countries) with a flash, you have a large margin of error present. It is much harder to do so to get a good picture. But even more critical is you need a camera that can use the light from the flash. Are you saying that the front camera on the iPhone 6 is just as good as the one on the iPhone 6s?
Yes. Electronic/virtual shutter, not a physical shutter. And, no, I never said the camera module used for the front facing camera was the same quality as the one used on the 6S. I know the 6S series devices have a higher resolution front camera module. What I was saying is that I do not see why the front camera cannot have a flash, since the 6S series phones use the display as the flash. That is the only hardware I see that is required, and all older model iPhones have it already. Both, the forward flash and Live Photo should be able to be implimented fairly easily on older eauipment if Apple wanted to. I do not see how the camera resolution has anything to do with either function.
As to your comment about needing a camera that can use the light from the flash ... A flash is nothing more than a light source. Since a camera is an optical immaging device, and thus require some kind of light to "see" the image it is going to capture, ALL cameras are capable of using whatever light source is available.
No, it is not a "virtual" shutter, it is an electronic shutter. Since it is obvious you don't know what you are talking about it is a waste to continue this discussion further. You will just have to live with the fact that Live Photo and the front flash won't be made available on earlier iPhone models. Period.
Please then, enlighten me on the difference?
Do you even shutter bro? An electronic shutter IS a virtual shutter. All it does is turn the pixels on or off to act like a shutter
I have down loaded IOS 9.1 today for my iphone 6 but there is no option for Live Photo.
Hi guys,
I just downloaded app so called "Phhhoto" and guess what it functioning like Live Photo and even they have social community to share the live photo.
I don't even think this feature need a hardware upgrade.
Basically the software will do. Again do try "phhhoto" application.
p/s: i'm not promoter okay.
Hmm, my reply was deleted because it contained a link to jailbreaking.
Anyway, will try again:
Live photos is not hardware dependant, force touch is so hopefully Apple won't be too greedy and release the feature to older iPhones once 6s sales die down.
I am disappointed with Apple.
Adrian.

Gee, what a surprise, on an Apple corporate site they won't let you post to something that would cancel the warranty on the iPhone.
The article is not exactly correct, on the 6s the ability to take a Live Photo is within the firmware of the camera they use, in the jailbreak version they are using software that is present in the JB version that films the video and takes the picture. Because of the limitations of the camera on the iPhone 6 the results, to be charitable, are pretty poor. Or pathetic. Take your choice.
Apple could write software themselves that would approximate Live Photo on the 6, or a 3rd party app could do it, but if they did you would probably be one of the first to write here and say the quality **** on the Live Photos on the 6 and you are disappointed with Apple. Which is why they didn't do so.
I've used Live Photo about maybe 5 times just to try it and 5 were of a toddler learning to walk. As I've said before it will be primarily used for babies and cats.
Agree on the Jailbreak link being removed. Really impressed and pleased with the response time to remove it.
If only the response time was as quick answering genuine concerns on these threads.
You are right, hardware is involved but it would have been nice to include the feature on the other phones considering how much we pay for them - even if not as good as on the 6s.
I have used live photos quite a few times, caught a few good ones with my daughter walking some dogs (not cats) from the R.S.P.C.A. where a still would not have told the whole story...
Adrian.
Okay, I'll amend it to pets and children. I've yet to find any situation where a longer video isn't superior, say 7 seconds.
I have seen the results with a modified iPhone 6 and out of the group of us reviewing them I was the most charitable giving it a poor rating. The 6s Live Photos are far, far superior due to the advanced camera. You must be fairly new to Apple, if they can't replicate the feature to meet their standards they aren't going to try, their was the same argument with MacBook Pros Airplay mirroring which was also hardware.
Also if you read the ToU that you agreed to when you came here this is a user-to-user technical support site, for the most part Apple does not participate here. I you think the volunteers are too slow to answer technical questions perhaps you need to call AppleCare.
It's the surprise of finding you have caught those extra shots that does it for me in its favour.
Fair enough this is a user-to-user support site. I would go to Apple care if there was one in my Country, Gibraltar, but there is not.
Started on a Sinclair ZX81/ZX Spectrum. Used my first Mac portable about 1991/92, gave up and went to Windows for a quite bit together with Unix/Linux. I will cling onto my 2012 Macbook Pro because I have now upgraded it to 8GB of RAM and a SATA Crucial SSD. If my hard drive goes, I just buy and fit another one.
I have yet to find a 3rd Party maker of PCIe SSD drives (not even OWC) so I had to fork out $300.00 for a 2nd hand 512GB Apple one for my son's Macbook Pro with Retina Display, Christmas present, don't tell him!
You can't touch the new models at all which means you are almost forced to buy the best one "In Case" you need to upgrade in the future.
"It's my ball and you' can't play with it" from Apple.
Same as the iPhone 6s, I bought the 128GB model "Just In Case". I moved onto it from an unreliable Note 4 and am really pleased with it.
Not as customisable as Android but the battery life/reliability and usability are no. 1.
Adrian.
Where can I send you my Christmas list?
Yes, sure:
Santa Claus,
North Pole.
NNNN NNN
Have you been good this year?
Else you'll get nowt but a lump of coal.....
🙂
