I got a message stating that I needed to upgrade iTunes to a more recent version

Hi Everyone,

I've just tried to backup my iPhone 6 to iTunes (version 11.4, the latest that works on Snow Leopard; my MacBook Pro can't run any more recent version of OS X, it's too old and 32-bit only), but I got a message stating that I needed to upgrade iTunes to a more recent version (12.2.2, I suppose), which, of course, doesn't work on Snow Leopard.

Have you guys encountered the same issue?

Today is The Day After (the Keynote), so it can't be a coincidence... 😉

First off, I'd like to thank "Host" for making my question of topic of its own: I tried that at first, but I got a red banner on top of the page saying I couldn't post, and I thought I'd been banished again...

Next, I wasn't implying anything, just that following the release of iOS 9.0 GM, maybe some servers were overburdened, and it could be the reason why I got this issue.

If that's not the case, I'm in trouble, because my 2006 MacBook Pro can't accomodate anything more recent than Snow Leopard (already installed and fully updated), and is stuck with iTunes 11.4.

And, to answer your question, yes, I've always backed up that iPhone 6 on that MacBook Pro, and it's the first time I've had that kind of message.

I'd find it hard to believe that Apple could cut off users of older machines like that, with the advent of its most recent iOS iteration.

I know, I know, I should shell a few (heck, many) bucks and buy a new Mac, but my finances being what they are, it's not in the cards just yet...

Wow. I had no idea that Apple did this. They did change the syncing specs for the iPhone 6 on OS X. You have to be running 10.7.5 now.

I have never heard of them upping the syncing requirements on a current device before like this. I'm sorry, I should have checked first. I will never understand why Apple operates like this and it ticks me off. Windows 7 is the minimum but their own loyal Mac users have to be running 10.7.5? I swear they do this to force us Mac users to upgrade and suck the Windows users into the fold. That really bites.

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

  • Mac: OS X v 10.7.5 or later
  • PC: Windows 7 or later
  • iTunes 12.3 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)

Well, that settles it, then... I'm not going to buy a new Mac simply so that I can sync my iPhone 6 over it.

I'm just going to spend more time on my (reliable, recent) PC running Windows 10, and less on my (trusty, venerable) 2006 MacBook Pro.

The only good thing I can say about the latter is the obvious: I've had it for nine years, and it's still running pretty smoothly.

Too bad Apple thinks programmed obsolescence is in the eye of the beholder... Their bad.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up!
