Rear camera stopped working after upgrade to iOS 9

updated to iOS 9 on my iPhone 5. once completed the rear (main) camera shows only a black screen. the front facing camera seems to work fine. other apps don't seem to be able to use the rear camera. There is also a warning symbol when tapped declares the flash cannot be used because the iPhone is too hot. My phone seems to be at room temperature. Also the flashlight does not work. I noticed the warning symbol doesn't appear (after a phone restart) until I switch to the front camera and back to the rear camera

This same issue seems to have appeared in iOS 8.4 updates from searching the forums here.

I have restored my phone and turned it off and on, but nothing has worked.

anyone?

thanks for any help.

I had this same problem. Apple told me it was a hardware issue, but replacing the camera and flash didn't help anything-- so it's definitely a software issue. However, after trying to replace the camera and flash, to no avail, and putting the originals back in, everything worked fine. A tech friend wonders if taking them out and putting them in again reset the connection. No idea, but Apple quoted me $270 for repairs, and the replacement parts are only $6 on Amazon.

I had the same issue..what happen was when I open camera its just black screen..front cam works..then i tried to use the flash it says phone is heating..wait to cool down..what I did was I dismantle the mobile using video guide..then check the ribbon point of camera is properly attached to the motherboard and found it was not properly attached. so i pulled it out and re attached..then it works fine for me..but make sure to be careful when you dismantle the mobile and removing the ribbon clips might damage to your mobile..also please don't do it if you have valid warranty with you..

I woke up this morning to my rear camera not working. It would not work on the iPhone camera app or on any other photo apps I have downloaded. It would take video, but not photos. A few days ago my flashlight stopped working as well. After reading everyone's input on how to fix this issue this is what I did and it seems to have worked.

1. Restore and delete everything on your iPhone.

Settings >> General >> Reset >> Erase All Content and Settings

2. Restore phone from original back up method (computer or iCloud)

3. Put your phone in low power mode.

Settings >> Battery >> Low power mode

Wait a few minutes while the phone is on low power mode.

4. Go back to Settings>> Battery>> Low power mode and turn Low power mode off.

Now try your camera. It worked for me. Hopefully it continues to work, haha. Good luck!

Quit out of any app that can access the iPhone camera – things like Camera, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Afterlight, etc

Flip the iPhone over and apply very slight pressure against the physical camera hardware using a finger, it may depress slightly indicating this loose camera issue

Now try to use the Camera app as usual (from lock screen access, or third party app is fine), it should work fine now and take pictures as usual

So, a malfunctioning camera, no camera apps are working, and loose physical camera hardware on the iPhone? That clearly indicates a hardware issue, and whether or not it impacts many iPhone 5 users is not entirely clear.

Have had exactly the same problem with my 4S since v9, initially thought it was hardware, now I know it's software. Tried the answers they didn't work. Has Apple fixed or has a fix for this? If so where is it and if not fixing this why not, can always get an android etc. Why would I want another iPhone. If this has affected 3 gems+ of Apple products. Maybe this should hit a blog.
