Where is the On-The-Go station in Podcasts app in iOS9?

The new feeds in the iOS 9 Podcasts app have destroyed the way I organize and listen to my podcasts. Where is the On-The-Go station? How can I sort Unplayed from oldest-to-newest rather than always seeing the newest episodes first? Where can I see a feed of everything that's been downloaded to my phone? The "Up Next" list doesn't indicate which podcasts are downloaded, and I can't find a way to get to it other than through the "Now Playing" screen. Very frustrated.

iPhone 6, iOS 9

OK. So confusing. I'm trying to use Up Next like the old On The Go. But ..... When I add a particular episode it automatically adds other episodes of that same podcast. And ..... If I go to play something directly it asks if I want to resume Up Next or override. Even though I choose resume it changes around what I've already put in there, moving them into history, and sometimes designating them for deletion.

I can deal with the less user friendly UI, but I can't handle constantly losing track of what I've put Up Next.

Any ideas from anyone?

I'm finding Up Next as it currently stands a bit of a waste. I still think the closest (and not that close!) replacement of the old "On the Go" is a new station with settings of:

  • Play [Order] to "Manual"
  • Unplayed Only to On.
  • Group by Podcast turned off. (This means you see individual episodes, not whole podcasts.)
  • Include / Episodes / All.

You can then edit that new playlist to drag and drop in the order you want. It's still clunky, but at least it doesn't make you "lose all your work" in the way that Up Next seems to.

Somewhat to my surprise, you can also rearrange the order in this station while it's playing. For example, you start an episode in the middle of the station/playlist: "Up Next" will then just display all the items below it. But then if you go into the station and edit (which you can't do from Up Next, I think), and move the currently playing episode to the top, then the Up Next list will also change accordingly. (Odd - I don't think it did that with 9.0.0, and instead you had to stop playing and resume to "reset" Up Next; maybe I missed it, or maybe the 9.0.2 update at least improved something.)

Agree with all. I haven't updated my iPad since I discovered how bad the changes are on the podcast app for ios9 on my iPhone. Podcast app is my most-used app. What were they thinking? I'm waiting for a new ios9 version that reverts back to old podcast app functionality. I could be waiting a while. Anybody know of a non-Apple podcast app that has on-the-go like functionality?

Here are two recent reviews of podcast manager alternatives:

I moved to Overcast a few months ago and it's been far better than the current iteration of Apple's Podcast app, but I don't really care about On-The-Go functionality - I just have a single big playlist of unplayed episodes. The Lifehacker review claims that Overcast is great at managing playlists, so you should definitely give it a try. It's free (with donations requested), so you've got nothing to lose.

Unfortunately I wouldn't hold my breath for an improvement from Apple. The powers-that-be in Apple have apparently decided that Thou Shalt Not Use Playlists for audiobooks or podcasts, alas.
