I had the same problem. Reason for this is, that after the iOS 9 upgrade new settings were implemented, defining which apps may backup to iCloud. And per default the photos are also copied to iCloud, even if photo stream etc. are turned off.

Goto settings, iCloud, storage, manage storage, click on "this iPhone" and switch the option Photo mediathek off.

-> Problem solved, now enough iCloud storage should be available for a backup (without photos)

I'm having the same problem, ever since upgrading to iOS 9. My last icloud backup was 9/15, the day before upgrading. I've tried the advice of turning off photo library in the manage storage section. Now I have 4.5 GB of iCloud storage. The next backup would be 3.2 MB. I plug the iPad (2nd generation) in and come back in an hour. I get a notification that there is not enough iCloud storage available and offers take me to the settings where I can upgrade my storage level.

Hi guys,

iOS9.1 just poped out, and the problem is still available!

I upgraded my storage from 5GB to 50GB, now I've 47GB remaining and I still have the "not enough storage available..." error message.

Does anyone from apple could give us a sign? Some of us are paying for storage and this probelm is slightly anoying...

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem and I eagerly waited for every iOS update to get it solved but nothing ever changed.

Then, I got it. And it seems to be extremely simple.

I can't say if it works also for you, but it worked for my Ipad, my Iphone and both my wife's Ipad and Iphone that had the same problem.

Basically the reason IS that the iOS update set the photo stream as automatic, and this will probably take too much space, but the solution is not just to turn it off, but you also have to do another thing that is to WAIT th right moment to do the backup.

Let's move to the solution:

go to SETTINGS->ICLOUD->ARCHIVE->MANAGE STORAGE

select "this iphone" or whatever device you're trying to backup

Now's the trick:

WAIT until "Backup Options" stops loading the size of the next backup. WAIT until "next backup size" is update with a number on your display.

Now, if this number is little enough to stay in the storage capacity you have, just go back to iCloud settings, choose backup and start the backup (remember to be wifi connected).

If the number is too big, just choose what to delete form next backup (your choice will probably be the photo stream...) and then wait for the new size of the "next backup" to show on the display. Go back and start the backup.

In short, it seems that if you don't let the device calculate the size of the "next backup" and show it on the display, the system won't be able to backup successfully.

I know it seems a stupid bug, but it worked for me.

If you still have problems with this issue, let's give it a try.

Hope it will be of any help.

cheers

Hi everyone,

So, the definitive solution:

  • Turn off all options in Settings > iCloud > Photos.
  • Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Name This iPhone (your device).
  • Scroll down and Delete Backup (if any).
  • Scroll back up and wait for the Next Backup Size to load.
  • If the Next Backup Size is over your available storage on iCloud, turn off Photo Library (below).
  • Go back to < Manage Storage and then again to Name This iPhone, again wait for the Next Backup Size to load.
  • If the Next Backup Size is still over your available storage on iCloud, turn off all the apps below - they might say "No Data", but turn them all off anyway (expand with Show All Apps).
  • Go back to < Manage Storage and then again to Name This iPhone, again wait for the Next Backup Size to load.
  • Now your Next Backup Size should be smaller than the amount of storage on your iCloud.
  • Turn on only the apps you need, then wait for the Next Backup Size to load - take care it doesn't exceed the amount of storage you have on iCloud.
  • You should now be able to do iCloud backups - repeat on all devices you have this issue with.

Cheers!
