Wow, this really helped me a lot! Thanks!

And I'd say Apple really needs to focus on this issue, since a lot of people seem to experience this problem.

To summarize what fixed the 'not enough space' problem:

  1. Remove old backup
  2. Make sure the backup will not become too big, e.g. remove photo library from backup items (Switched on automatically after deleting old backup!)
  3. WAIT until your device calculated the new size of the backup (10-15 seconds). The size will be shown on your screen.
  4. Manually perform a backup to iCloud

Like already mentioned in an earlier post here, this might be some kind of caching problem on your device, or the iClous server. Buying more iCloud storage won't fix the issue.

I tried to follow your instructions, but my iphone does not list ARCHIVES. I have 50GB storage plan, I have 42GB left, but I too receive the message that I cannot take photos because there is not enough storage.

When I go to SETTINGS > ICLOUD > there is no ARCHIVES listed. I go directly to STORAGE > MANAGE STORAGE > BACKUP OPTIONS. From there I can choose the DATA I want to back up, and most of the data that has backed up is not needed. So I've turned off all those apps that I don't need backed up. But most of them had very little data, like just KB, some 0 KB, so it didn't make a difference.

I still am unable to take photos because of the storage issue..
