I spoke too soon - its been going on and off all day, each time I put in airplane mode and it searches again. Im abroad with a uk phone so roaming and it either says no service or logs into providers with no or little signal (not the usual french provider it logs into) Phones useless much of the time, totally intermittant but never know when it will or won['t work. rubbish

just want to give an update...

I was finally after many hours able to reinstall the os on my 4s. what i had to do was put in another sim card (an old USA t-mobile card that is inactive) and press something like dismiss or cancel (cant remember) when it would tell me that the sim was not readable/detected (or something like that).

eventually it either read the sim or just went past this process (i cant know which one or something else for sure), but I repeated this dismiss/cancel process about 30 times before it went on to let me activate my phone with my wifi connection.

another thing... i actually switched to another wifi connection when i tried this so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

it's a bit like doing black magic you just really don't know what is going to blow up the phone or make it work.

in any case i've never been able to get any cellular service on the phone and for now, until i get a new one in december I have to tether it to a cheap 2012 android phone. while this is not the best solution, it seems the least time consuming and least likely to result in lost data.

Well,

Just got my iPhone 5 back from the iStore (authorized apple repair and service centers here in my country) and after 2 weeks with the phone they couldn't do anything pretty much. It just doesn't pick up any cell signal, at all. No matter what you do.

They recommended to call Apple directly to escalate the case because it is out of warranty by 4 days, and well...its basically a freaking iPod now 😠

I'll update once I talk to someone in support -.-'

IiPhone 5. Continually would loose service. THen restart the phone and it would come back but never stay. Here is how we solved the problem. After setting up as a new iPhone it would not work. Then we put the phone in recovery mode by holding down on the reset button while connecting the cable to the pc with iTunes. When prompted to restore or update we did the update. After the update we turned off Lte And disable auto network/ carrier. THe phone has worked perfectly for 3 days.

PReviously I was doing a restore to factory settings and this did not work. I think the main fix. Was to do an update and not a restore while in RECOVERY mode. I had this issue for months before solving it. Btw I am on 9.1

OK, I've been having the same issues on my 6 for over a week now with a replacement handset from the Apple Store. Spent 3 hours connected to Vodafonr tonight with them trying restores, restarts, recovery mode etc etc, in the end they recommended contacting Apple support. I did this and explained the following.

THe problem started with:

intermitant "No service"

SEarching in the signal bar

no carrier setting option in general settings

SIM card works in other devices

known good sims won't work in this device.

i Also noticed whilst on the phone to them that the device seemed to be looking fur a personal hotspot permanently.

AFter being on the phone to them fur over an hour they recommended they sent me a new handset out and I would be charged £29.99

i refused to pay for a replacement to replace a faulty handset they had given me 9 days earlier.

WHilst messing around tonight I have gone into:

Settings - Mobile data - Mobile data network - LTE set up (optional ) was blank, I've basically put exactly the same in them fields as shown in Mobile data, within seconds service has come back.

HOpe this helps some of you.

Notice when the phone is misbehaving that some of the options in settings do not appear such as carrier. also doesn't appear to see the sim card

I've been struggling with IOS 9 since it was released and seem to have tried everything including taking it to the local fix it shop who said that there was something wrong with the chip.

I tried again when I got it back and got excited when it eventually managed to restore and it got to restore or set up as a new phone, unfortunately this was short lived as the phone wouldn't activate either of wi-fi or iTunes. Opened up a case with apple and got told to restore again an this would sort it out. Not true, now back at square one with the iTunes logo and cable and keep getting error code 1. tried again with apple but with no joy, got told its an hard ware problem and phone needs to be repaired at a cost of £206 on my CC.

Waiting for the next update of ios to see if that will fix it

Nothing can help in this, no restore, sim in and out or upgrade and downgrade. I tried this simple thing and it's working for me since then. Just put your network service on manual from automatic, put your phone on A.plane mode for at least 30 minutes and turn it off then you will get your signals. if still same problem then restart it. Works on iPhone 5, you can try on 5s 6 or 6s and see if it work.
