Ipad really slow after update to iOS 9

I updated my iPad mini (1) to iOS 9 yesterday, and now it is really slow. It takes forever to open or close apps, the swipe to close is a real pain, I have to swipe several times before I can close an app, and sometimes they just won't go away. I am getting very frustrated with this and wish I had not gone and updated it. Has anyone else had this issue?

Peoples,

The amount of users reporting into these forums with iOS issues with their iDevices represents a very, VERY small minority.

There are tens of millions (or more) of iDevice users who aren't having issues with their devices and who don't post in user troubleshooting forums, like those provided by Apple.

Just because the small minority of users having issues, that post here, doesn't mean that Apple is at fault or that Apple is forcing users of older hardware to upgrade to newer hardware or Apple is "out to get your money" for a new device!

It just means that some older hardware has had some arbitrary issue that has caused problems with upgrading to new versions of iOS.

OR there was some unforeseen iOS bug or software glitch or anomaly that has affected a small minority of users devices.

This has always been a common issue across all major iOS AND OS X upgrades/updates.

It a pervasive issue when dealing with OS upgrades/updates with so many users with so many different configurations.

WIth an ever growing iDevice user base, there will be users that will, invariably and inevitably, run into problems.

Yes, it is a small consolation for those who have iDevices that either aren't working properly or not at all, but the issues ARE NOT RAMPANT across the entire user base of iOS devices!

Apple can't test for every device configuration contingency.

Everyone uses these devices differently and have different apps and data on them and older devices cannot use some features of a new iOS upgrade due to older hardware limitations.

There are just too many variables that are out of Apple's control and can't be tested or accounted for.

For those iDevice users who have devices that are, basically, non-functional or dead, my recommendation is to bring your iDevice into an Apple Store and see if they can diagnose the issues and perform the upgrade in the store for you.

If you have never backed up the data that is on your iDevice, be prepared for Apple to do a restore as new device and try to install the iOS 9 upgrade on an empty iDevice.

Good Luck to everyone and I hope all of you can get your iPads/iPhones/iPod Touches working well again!

How can you make such sweeping comments. If its just few people reporting doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist. Check other forums and people are exactly reporting the same lagging issue on their Old iDevices. With your statement it appears apple doesn't care for people using their old devices. It is a genuine issue and someone rightly pointed out that slowest app on iOS 9 is Safari, typing itself is so sluggish.

Apple should seriously provide us with an option to revert back to the old version as my ipad is absolutely unusable with this kind of sluggishness.

I never stated that the problem doesn't exist.

I stated that it is affecting a small percentages of users on older devices (based on users reporting in here, probably much less than 1%)

I have updated both my wife's iPad 2 and my iPad 3, TWICE (to iOS 9.0.2), with no issues to either devices.

I can make this comment because it is completely true.

Older iPad users that upgraded and had no issues aren't coming to Apple troubleshooting forums to report their good news.

If you update with your iPad connected to a computer sync'd to iTunes and your iDevice has, at least, between 6-8 GBs of free storage space, or more, left and the iDevice has more than 50% battery life, you have a higher chance of a successful iOS upgrade/update.

I have never trusted the Over The Air (OTA) method for doing major upgrades/updates as anything can happen to data over a WiFi connection/data transfer.

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

How much free storage space is left on your iPad? If it is less than 3Gbs of space, you may want to consider backing up your iPad and start deleting items of a your iPad like reducing the amount of music, movies and photos as a good start.

If you have any eBooks or eMagazines, these take up a lot of data storage space, too!

Then, consider removing apps that you no longer use or use infrequently to gain additional storage space on your iDevice.

if you are still having issues with your IPad, I would suggest bringing your iPad into an Apple Store to see if they can fix/solve your issues?

Make a backup of all your data ( iCloud, iTunes or some other method ) before you bring it in for diagnosis and possible fix.

Again, good luck to you and I hope you can get your iPad back to normal operation.

MY iPad 3 is fixed. After trying all techie suggestions, visiting the Genius Bar, restoring, reinstalling, i finally gave up and had accepted the slowed down iPad. Then, today I decided to switch the wall paper from a moving bubbly one, to a still flower. INSTANTLY, my iPad started functioning at its normal speed as it was before the IOS 9 upgrade. It's fast again. So, if you have a moving wallpaper, change it. Hopefully this can solve everyone's problems!

The "moving wallpaper" effect is part of the visual eye candy that has been part of iOS since iOS 7.

If you do not want to have any visual motion-like effects happening on your iDevice (which, btw, does affect performance of iOS devices) you can change this in the Settings App under General setting, Accessibility, Reduce Motion and set this to "On".

Your iDevice performance should increase appreciably.

I forgot that I have had these "eye candy" effects reduced on both my wife's iPad 2 and my iPad 3 since iOS 7.
