ios9 upgrade causing battery drain on apple watch

I am using the Apple Watch (42mm) for just about 2 weeks and was initially very impressed with the battery life - I am only using very few notification and absolutely no apps - I got almost 2 days battery life - Yesterday, I upgraded my phone to IOS9 and since observe battery drain on the watch of about 20% per hour without any usage ... presumably, IOS9 is connecting and exchanging data with higher frequency, or things have changed on how the watch connects to the watch, different usage pattern between wifi or bluetooth, regardless, IOS9 on the phone made the watch utterly useless.

Both Apple Watch and iPhone 6 drains at a more rapid pace prior to 9.0 through 9.0.2. The un/re-pairing worked after the 9.0.1. Issue reappeared after 9.0.2. Tried un/re-pairing, worked for about a day and both units are draining again. No positive results re-booting either units. There is definitely something constantly running in the background due to the updates draining both units. I do not have a crazy amount of apps and have not added any for about a year. Prior to the updates, I was able to charge both units prior to going to sleep and generally be about 10-15% down over night...now, I wake up to both units completely drained. I have not upgraded my iPad Mini to 9 (afraid to) and have no charging issues. I have a good several dozen family/friends/associates experiencing the same thing.

Same issue. Running latest OS on both iPhone 6s and watch and now watch battery is draining over twice as fast as it used to. I updated OSs anout the same time I upgraded to the 6s and restored my watch from backup on new phone, so unclear if the restore did it, the 6S, or the OS updates.

Has anyone had any luck with Apple support or unpairing and setting up as a new watch?

Both my iPhone and Watch were updated to the latest iOS. It was only the past weekend did I notice that the battery was draining to 20% by 6pm. Normally with light usage I would be down to just 70% before bed time. I unpaired my Watch and than paired it with the backup and the problem still persisted. I tried unpairing it once more time but did not restore it from a backup. All seems normal again. The only changes I made in the last month was adding Facebook Messenger. I was also receiving a high volume of notifications from Whats App from a new group chat with friends.

I am very happy with my Apple Watch battery life. I charge my watch every night so I have 100% to start my day with. By the time I go to bed my watch typically has 75% left. I typically receive 10 to 20 notifications a day. Checking glances 20 to 30 times a day. Respond to incoming call 3 to 4 times a day (but never use the Watch to conduct call even thought it can. I typically just decline calls or continue calls on iPhone.) Use Siri to dictate short responses to incomings IM a few times a day.

It was not smooth sailing to begin with. I actually seriously thought of selling my 42mm Apple Watch after I upgraded to Watch OS 2 and saw battery drained to power saving mode once in a few days before 6pm - which was not acceptable since it should provide assistance I need at least during work hours.

Glad that I did not sell it after being able to "fix" it and now enjoy the good battery life. I made several changes but not sure which one change, or all changes, did the trick to fix the battery life problem:

- Upgraded iPhone to iOS 9.x. Now at iOS 9.2

- Upgraded Watch OS to 2.1

- Turned off "Wake Screen on Wrist Raise" under "General" -> "Wake Screen". Watch defaults to enable.

- Adjusted brightness to minimum

Now my Apple watch uses roughly 15% to 20% of battery a day. I am very happy with it.

So, randomly my fairly new apple watch started the battery drain this week. I read all the posts and was reluctant to go beyond power cycling the phone and watch. What WORKED was opening the watch app on the phone and discovering that equally randomly every app on the watch was toggled to "notifications". Once I toggled everything off, the watch is as good as new.
