I updated to IOS 9 this morning and when i try to text there's this gray bar extending through out the text box with "0:00" at the end, I cannot get rid of it and I cannot see what I type as I'm typing. Also, when I go to send a text to a new person, it does not appear. This happened after updating to ios9

So far the only thing that seems to work is to change the setting under messages close subject field. It defaulted to plain text on an IMessage line and got rid of the gray bar. I am running ios 9 on an old 4s.
I just type in content and keep hitting return so the gray bar moves down and I can see what I've entered. It is TOTALLY ridiculous. New 9.2 is no help.
This is only a temporary fix. You need to go to settings and turn on character count. That worked for me.
Thanks! This has actually worked since I made the change yesterday. I agree with everyone else that this should not be a permanent fix, but it works.
Thanks for the tip -- I tried several others that did not work but this one did! Such an annoying problem and it was nice to be able to fix it.

The just released iOS 9.1 fixes this issue.
turning the subject field on and then off in settings I found to be the quickest and simplest fix.
