Unread mail showing in All Inboxes only with iOS9

Or it is possible there are more critical bugs that their engineers are fixing and this one, which is essentially cosmetic, hasn't come to the top of the list yet.

This is not a "cosmetic" issue. For people getting a lot of business email on their phone, having to remember what the unread number was before new email arrives turns it into a critical functionality issue. Unless your memory is so good that you know exactly what the unread number is supposed to be, and thats not likely, there is no cosmetics involved. Maybe we need to put a sticky note on our phones to remind us?

I went ahead and created a folder in my webmail account that dates back to may/2015 and moved all prior messages into that folder and out of my regular inbox. Then went through each screen on the phone and "marked all as read". It took about an hour to complete but at least I know when emails are arriving without having to memorize the prior unread number of emails. I am still losing access to those email in my main inbox but they are still stored in the folder I created. The only unknown at this point, and I dont dare do it, is to open that folder on my phone thinking it will all of a sudden show all those emails as unread once again.

This is a completely unacceptable bug and not a single acknowledgement from Apple. Look at the 9.02 release notes and tell me where there are more critical bugs the engineers where fixing. Podcast, screen rotations? Laughable.

I'm having the same "all inboxes unread email issue." This is horrible!!! I contacted Verizon and Apple before logging on here and they claimed there were no issues reported. Obviously they were dishonest about this. I see that so many others are having this issue. Please help if you have been able to resolve this. FYI, rebooting doesn't work.

Have iphone 6 and updated to IOS v. 9, 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 within a few days of each other. Since IOS update, the same problem discussed here shows up now after I make a phone call. I don't know which version is causing the problem, however, I think I've figured it out. After a phone call, my email icon says has "4,...95" over it as number of emails. When I open the email app, I have 4294967295 on the ALL INBOXES line for total number of emails. I knew that was wrong! At first I thought it was a phone # since it's 10 digits, so I googled 4294967295 and found out this: "The number 4,294,967,295, equivalent to the hexadecimal value FFFF,FFFF is the maximum value for a 32-bit unsigned integer in computing." That's the bug. The device is showing this max 32-bit number, so it's definitely a software issue with the new IOS release. At least my email icon doesn't show the whole number, just an abbreviated non-numerical string. Does it happen with anyone else at other times besides after making a phone call?

Just resolved problem with help of Genius Bar. It's to do with POP mail accounts (like TalkTalk). Apple guy changed my TalkTalk account to an IMAP account and deleted the old one.

-- glad to hear someone's getting a little assist from Apple on this bothersome, on-going issue... So guess the rest of us need to call support and request the same fix on an individual basis...? Would think that by now Apple would've stepped up to the plate and addressed the problem with an update fix...

Could someone briefly outline how to create an IMAP email account in iOS 9. Setting up my talktalk account didn't show me the option to do this (unless I missed something) and so it is a POP account.

TThe genius went onto the TalkTalk support website and followed their instructions. Ignore the warning about trying to change an existing POP account, and instead try to add a new account before deleting the old one. I recall he said something about not needing SSL(?) when prompted. Good luck!

This is great but a lot of us don't want to get rid of POP. I don't because I want to briefly look at mail on my phone (my eyesight is too bad to do anything meaningful on the hop) and then attack everything on my main computer when I'm back in my office. Not the way Apple want me to do things, but it's the way I've worked for years and I'm happy. I'm not exactly an old dog, but I don't like having to learn new tricks and change the way I work to suit the new all the time.

I Still access my TalkTalk Mail on my mobile, so you could too. Just Add another account, using the same email address, but save it as an IMAP account instead of a POP account. Don't forget to delete the old one afterwards. All your mail will still be there, and it'll continue to work as normal.

I have Outlook POP accounts, which for me to change to IMAP with my web host GoDaddy is a real hassle. GoDaddy doesn't convert POP to IMAP; POP has to be deleted and then IMAP email has to be added to domain. I have 9 emails over 2 domains, so for me that's a LOT of work and I think it cost more to have IMAP rather than POP. I don't think you can just change your iPhone or iPad settings to IMAP for each email account. I think the actual email HAS to be IMAP. If there is an easy way, let me know!!!

I've been having this issue since upgrading to 9.0 a few weeks ago (I have a 6 Plus). I think I've got it figured out (for me, anyway). I had 2 e-mail accounts: iCloud, and Hotmail. I suspected Hotmail might be the culprit, so I deleted the acct from my iPhone and added it back. I think before deleting, it was a POP3 acct and after adding it back, it is now an IMAP acct. Either way, deleting and adding it back seems to have solved my issue (I think the POP3 version kept trying to download old messages as "new'). Bottom line, my flag count for unread messages is WORKING AGAIN!! 🙂

I think you're correct. I deleted my Hotmail acct (as a POP3) and added it back. After adding back, I noticed it was IMAP. So, I think Microsoft must have changed it from POP3 to IMAP. Either way, it fixed my phantom unread message issue. Good luck with your issue!

would certainly fit with my experience, although I don't think that TalkTalk were quite so helpful; that required a more determined effort to ensure that it was added as an IMAP account, because it still defaulted to POP3.
