updated to ios 9 and Words with Friends no longer works

I've closed all apps, turned phone off, and back on. Words With Friends will open, but my finger no longer works on the screen to take a turn. Has anyone experienced this problem or has a suggestion?

HHave the same problem , put a question on Apple forum about it , they deleted it saying wasn't a technical issue !

went into Aplle store at Westfield for help , they told me the problem was the App . Didn't like my reply that phone worked perfectly well before upgrade . Then he said had to many apps open , so close them and it will work . So closed them all and asked him to show me words with friends working . Didn't happen , so asked to see someone on Genius Bar , oops sorry earliest appointment will be next Friday !!!

HE was insistent Issue is nothing to do with Apple .

NO help from Apple anywhere . have been with Apple for 15 years , didn't think I would ever come to the conclusion maybe it's time to move away from them and their sheer arrogance .

Hi everyone,

In iOS7 and iOS8, Apple marked some things these apps rely on as 'deprecated' and decided they should be replaced with updated versions, to improve things like efficiency and battery life. In iOS9, many of these updates were fully implemented by Apple, removing old libraries, methods, etc and replacing them with new, better ones.

Developers have been given notice of this and have had up to 2 years to update their apps accordingly. While many developers have released updates, some haven't.

This is only an issue because the developer has failed to update their app in time, even though they have been given a lot of notice.

The issue should be resolved when the developer releases an update for their app. I suggest you contact the developer, so they can be made aware of the issue, if they aren't already. If the developer is aware, an email can't hurt to show how frustrated it makes their customers.

I hope this explanation is satisfactory, and the app gets updated soon!

Many thanks for your reply , my concern is if Apple knew this why on earth did you not advise customers BEFORE the upgrade , instead of leaving everyone floundering !

I Have been with Apple for over fifteen years and am seriously considering moving away . Software issues have becoming a headache over the last couple of years , and am getting a bit fed up with your cavalier approach and passing the buck attitude .

HAd ad the unfortunate pleasure of going into an Apple Store for help , and was totally fobbed off with excuses and remarks that were not helpful in the least .

IF you have a new product wouldn't it be a lot easier if you launched it honestly and not blame the customer ( or your suppliers ) . Yes your suppliers you sold the app to us !

Hi Dennis,

Firstly, I'd like to note that I'm not an Apple employee, nor am I employed by any company affiliated with Apple. It is not my job and I am not paid to assist anyone on this forum. It is a place where users help other users. On occasion, Apple employees may assist users, but they will have a notice below their avatar.

If you would like to chat to an apple support representative, you may do so at support.apple.com

It's not really feasible for Apple to advice customers of deprecations. Emailing every user with a list of deprecated libraries and methods is a silly idea. Nobody would understand what most (if any) of it means. So, they don't. Even if you did understand it, you wouldn't know which apps use these and may have issues because they're removed. It may also foster an idea that updates are bad, when they're not. They bring great new features and improvements.

Your experience at the Apple Store is understandably frustrating. This really isn't the kind of experience employees and the company want you to have. Being a former Apple Store employee, I can tell you that the majority of employees don't know RAM from ROM. But why should they? They're retail employees. Nobody would walk in to GAP and ask how jeans are stitched.

Additionally, apps aren't a part of the retail store experience at all, their sold through a separate online marketplace. iTunes support, or the developer's own support should be sought in these circumstances.

Either way, the problem is with the developer. I can't tell what exactly has been removed to cause the app to become unresponsive in this way, or to say how long ago Apple marked it for removal, but it's safe to say it was at least June, when Apple held their WWDC keynote and released specifications on iOS9.
The developer has had at least 3 months, but, up to just over 2 years, to update their app in preparation.
For most developers, the update will be simple and painless, simply searching through their code for anything deprecated and replacing it, or running the app in debug mode and seeing where it crashes.

Again, I'll stress that you should email the developer, as this is entirely down to them to fix. It should be easy, and they really should have done it by now. It's somewhat absurd that they haven't.

Best Regards,
Connor

With the fragmentation of Android, developers have many more problems keeping apps up to date than they ever do on Apple. Deprecation of apps on particular devices happen much more frequently. I don't believe by any means that Apple is perfect but know plenty of people with Android devices that can't get or use particular apps on their devices simply due to fragmentation.

If you decide to move away from Apple then that's completely up to you. Just remember that while the grass may seem greener on the other side, they have their own set of problems.

@dennisandpam

My use of 'you' was generic, as to say anyone, not specifically yourself.

My comments about store employees and their lack of technical expertise was based on my experience. I was not attempting at all to be condescending. There is no need for a retail employee to know these things. My comparison was supposed to show that it is the job of a retail employee to take a customer through the typical user experience, that's all. They shouldn't need to know how each internal component of the system functions.

Your tone is quite pointed, and unsuited for this environment. I feel that from your last 2 messages, you have come here to either argue with someone, or blame an Apple rep for you wanting to switch over a single app not working because the developer has failed to update it.

Apple Support Communities are filled with great people who spend their own time freely helping other users. I'm really only starting out. It's ridiculous that in a genuine attempt to assist other users, you send that back.

I've done my best to answer the original question as fully as possible. If anyone else would like further clarification on the subject, please reply.

I do not wish to enter into discussions on pros and cons of Apple v android , I wanted a clear concise answer as to why after an upgrade my iPhone 6 failed to

function correctly .

I Have been with Apple many years , their products are good , its just that a couple of " updates" have not fared well , and no matter what you try you cannot get

an answer !

IT just happened that Words with friends was the topic that caught my eye , as being one of the apps that was not responding after the infamous iOS 9 upgrade ..

Good of luck in your challenge of advising on here !

YOu are doing more than Apple in advising of issues . I didn't say that Apple should e mail everyone , they could have put a banner with the update advising that some apps may not work in conjunction with the upgrade .

Good Luck in your endeavours

Hi Wordies,

We've been receiving reports from our players who upgraded to iOS 9 that they are experiencing Game Freeze issues or unable to move Tiles after being idle for a certain period of time. We are currently working to resolve this issue so you can go back to playing without experiencing any disruption.

In the meantime, you may try these workaround steps to help fix your concern:

From the iOS Home Screen

- Navigate to Settings

- Navigate to Game Center, which will prompt you to log in

- You can either choose to log in or cancel

- Re-launch Words with Friends

Please watch out for our update once we have resolved this issue, and we would appreciate your cooperation by hitting the "Fix it, Zynga!" button at the bottom of this article, to let us know how many players are affected.

Thanks for playing!
