iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

Hi!

It appears that the calculation of the next backup size is still incorrect. The size of the last backup seem to be correct - however I don't know any way of confirming it's correct.

Checking my regular storage calculation (the storage on the iPhone), it seems my Messages are 376 MB (of which everything should be backed up to iCloud, I think?).

Checking the iCloud last backup it's 619 MB which sounds reasonable I think since it's not only Messages but a lot of other information as well.

However, the next backup size to iCloud is calculated to only 8.6 MB. And Messages are not shown in that list.

Thanks for replying! I'm glad its working for you!

Hmmm...I wonder if my problem is that I moved from 8.4.1 to 9.1. my phone didn't backup last night. I'm wondering if it's because I turned auto backup off then back on yesterday to see if that would change how things are calculated (so that I would have to wait 24hrs after turning it back on, but I don't know if that's how it actually works). After I posted my phone recalculated the last backup to 7.3gb (originally it was 7.4gb) and the next to be 7.3gb. When I check this morning it said the last backup was still showing as Sunday (7.3gb) and the next was 86mb (still showing no data for most apps). I'm at a bit of a loss here. i don't know what to do.

Anyone have any advice?

iCloud Drive and iCloud backup are not the same thing.

For your backup issues have you tried:

Resetting the device: hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Slide to Unlock screen displays, you can check your iCloud backup info to see if it has updated.

If that doesn't work, try signing out of iCloud and then back in.

Thanks for the reply, Gail.

Apparently my phone backup to the iCloud just after I finished doing a manual backup to my Macbook (I had changed the setting back to "backup to iCloud" and then I stepped away, during which time my phone fell asleep still connected to my computer). It seems to have backed up everything, as the backup amount was about 7.5GB. I rechecked it later this afternoon and found that the "next backup size" is about 80MB.

I had done the reset several times, but have not yet tried to sign out then back in. When I had done the resets last night and over the weekend, sometimes it would show what seems to be the correct backup size and other times it was really low; until this morning, it was showing that there was no iCloud backup since Sunday.

It seems like things are inching towards being resolved - we'll see how things go. Hopefully it does an auto backup tonight.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the backup size info. I just checked my iPhone 5s that is running iOS 9.1, and it backed on on 10/24 when I last had it plugged into power. It said that my last Backup size was 2.9 GB, and that the Next Backup size was 23 MB. I just plugged it in to the charger and waited a bit, and it just finished doing the automatic backup. The Backup was 2.9 GB, and now it says the Next Backup size it 7 MB.....

So, It's just not displaying the correct info for the Next Backup size, but it is backing up your device correctly and fully.

Hey,

now i had a call with some apple engeneer (after last chance with totaly restoring iphone from itunes backup) from apple support, and he prooved me, that the problem with icloud backup (i have 3GB backup size and all applications unchecked from backup) is on their side and they are working on it to solve this ios9 icloud backup problem.

So i stop for now with any other "working solution" (nothing of them worked for me) and waiting for mail from apple, that they have fixed the problem and then i write here back if it works.

Friend of mine was unable to backup for almost a month.

Here are the steps that Apple provided to him and it worked.

1. Backup phone to computer.

(do not forget to transfer purchases during backup)

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

Redownload or transfer your iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad or iPod to a computer - Apple Support

2. Restore iphone as new.

Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

3. Restore from itunes backup.

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

4. Wait until apps download completely and you see all of your stuff back.

Attempt to backup giving few tries by clicking backup now.

It actually didn't backup right away, but left connected to charger backed itself up within 2 hours.

The ultimate solution for "Last backup couldn't be completed" after upgrade to iOS9

I used to have iPhone 5s which has been backing up properly even after iOS9 upgrade, but I received this error after migration to iPhone 6s+

and from search I found that many people suffering this error regardless the phone type, it is all about iOS9 upgrade. so I tried many of the proposed soultions and none worked for me.

I kept trying all possibilities until I found the following scenarios which has provided solution to all devices.

Option 1: (IF you don't want to back up photo to iCloud, otherwise go option 2)

1- Disable iCloud Photo Library

1.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Photos -> disable "iCloud photo library"

2- Delete iCloud Photo Library to free iCloud space. (Don't do this step if you have iCloud photo lobrary enabled on other devices)

2.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iCloud Photo Library -> Disable and Delete

3- Delete any previous backup of this device.

3.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iPhone this iphone

3.2- click "Show All Apps" even though it does not make any sense, just do it.

3.3- Wait for the wheel spinning till it is finished

3.4- Goto the end of the page then Click "Delete Backup",keep trying until it is succeeded.

4- Backup again and wait until it fails.

4.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Backup -> Backup Now

4.2- Wait until the backup fails.

5- Execlude Photo Library from next iCloud Backup.

5.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iPhone this iphone

5.2- click "Show All Apps" even though it does not make any sense, just do it.

5.3- Wait for the wheel spinning till it is finished

5.4- Search for "Photo Library" then disable it.

6- Do the backup again. (this time it will succeed hopefully)

6.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Backup -> Backup Now

6.2- Wait until the backup finish.

Option 2: (you want to back up photo to iCloud, and you have enough iCloud space to accommodate it)

This the tricky part, since iOS9 Apple has separated iCloud photo library from the rest of phone backup.

But there is a bug here, which is:

If not all photos are uploaded to iCloud, the phone backup will try to backup photos same as previous versions, and icloud is failing the backup as it is not supposed to receive photos during phone backup.

The exit of this trap is to confirm all photos are uploaded to iCloud before doing the phone backup.

1- Delete any previous backup of this device.

1.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iPhone this iphone

1.2- click "Show All Apps" even though it does not make any sense, just do it.

1.3- Wait for the wheel spinning till it is finished

1.4- Goto the end of the page then Click "Delete Backup",keep trying until it is succeeded.

1.5- Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.3 again after previous backup is deleted, then take note of "Next Backup Size",and notice that "Photo Library" is available and enabled.

1.6- Even if you try to disable "Photo Library" it will not accept because there is no previous backup yet.

2- Enable iCloud Photo Library

2.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Photos -> enable "iCloud photo library"

3- Confirm that all photos are uploaded to iCloud Photo library

3.1- Open "Photos" and notice the spinnig wheel at upper right corner near to network name.

3.2- Go agin to Settings -> iCloud -> Photos, and check the update status below "iCloud Photo Library"

3.3- as it will tell "uploading xxx photos", wait until it completely finish.

3.4- if it got stuck at one photo for long time, it might be a large video, just wait.

3.5- if it got stuck for really long time, then try hard rest (power + front button until restart), then redo steps 3.1 to 3.4.

3.6- upon completion the status message will show "Updated Just Now"

4- Confirm that iCloud Photo Library is completed

4.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> iPhone this iphone

4.2- click "Show All Apps" even though it does not make any sense, just do it.

4.3- Wait for the wheel spinning till it is finished

4.4- Notice that "Next Backup Size" now is less than previoes size of 1.5,simply because photos are excluded.

4.5- Notice that "Photo Library" has disappeared from list, simply because all photos are already uploaded.

5- Do the backup again. (this time it will succeed hopefully)

5.1- Settings -> iCloud -> Backup -> Backup Now

5.2- Wait until the backup finish.

Thank you jehad-refaie

I too had this problem and between you and saeed.ayum you have covered the solution completely. Don't know how either one of you came up with all this or who figured it out first, but the fact you took all this time and effort to post all the details is amazing and the Apple community should all be grateful! Well done. Now if I could only get you guys to figure out the 'Failed to Update to 9.1...some error occurred ?try later?' When updating iOS from 9.0.2 to 9.1' I would be a real happy camper!

(see previous threads...

"I also find that I can not update from 9.0.2 to 9.1 (Unable to install msg during verification stage) I wonder if the 2 problems are related? See threads re 'Unable to install 9.1'")

I only started running into problems backing up to iCloud after updating my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 9.1.

I haven't been able to back up to iCloud successfully since 10/24/15. Having found the earlier portions of this thread first, I've already been able to delete the stored iCloud backup, but haven't been able to generate a new one. I've gone through the steps of a hard reset, switching iCloud Backup off and on, resetting the Network settings, multiple attempts to back up to iCloud after each of those steps. I eventually made a backup from the phone itself to iTunes. I'm a little relieved to have that backup, but am still unable to backup to iCloud.

My Photos says its current as of this evening. iCloud Photo Library is switched on. I'd prefer to not mess with that unless absolutely necessary. While I've backed up my images to Google Photos and Carousel/Dropbox I'm still a little paranoid about removing any photos/backups within iCloud just yet.

I don't have an issue with storage space in iCloud, as I've got 167 GB remaining there.

I've tried to go through the steps you outline, but since I've already removed the backup there are no apps to let load. Is there something I may be missing or a tip that might help me sort this out with attempting to restore my phone from the iTunes backup?

It's rather disappointing this problem is persisting through the iOS 9 updates this far. Seems like a common problem with a significant consequence for those who affected by it.

Thanks in advance!

I was having the same problem for a month in two iPhones. Tried everything written here in 18 pages but nothing worked for me. Finally yesterday I called Apple Support and they advised something and both phones are fixed and iCloud back up works just fine as it used to be before iOS 9 updates. What i did is just change the DNS setting of the wireless connection to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Hope this helps.
