iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

I'm not sure if this sheds any light on the query but I'll share it anyway.

I bought an iPad Air 2 last week to replace an old iPad. It was set up and backed up to iCloud in store. Photos were transferred from the old iPad to the new one. Next day I had cause to contact Apple Support (the point was unrelated to this query) and in the call the agent noted the new iPad was not on ios 9. He talked me thru the steps to upgrade. The upgrade seemed to be running OK and we ended the call. 24 hours later it was still configuring iCloud and I could not get past that screen so I called Apple again. That agent took me thru deleting iCloud backup and rebuilding the iPad from scratch. While a bit frustrating, that all seemed to work fine. Today I tried to sync with iTunes to download other photos from the PC to the iPad. ITunes did not recognise the iPad and gave options of either setting iPad up as a new machine or restoring backup from the old iPad. One of these options had to be accepted to continue. As neither was appropriate I called Apple Support yet again.

Various attempts were made by the 2 agents I spoke to to solve problem. Backup from iPad to iCloud could be seen on the ipad, and on iCloud on PC monitor. iTunes could only offer either set up as new iPad or restore from old ipad - and that backup no longer exists on iCloud.

Agent had a lengthy discussion with the engineers and told me there is a known problem with ios 9 which is being addressed and an update should be issued next week. Apparently ios 9 on the device looks as if it backs up to iCloud but is then unable to see the iCloud. to do a restore. Checking what is in the backup on iCloud showed there were no files. So ios 9 is not doing a proper backup to iCloud. That's why on iTunes my new machine only offered the option of backup from the old ipad or being set up as a new ipad. Since neither is applicable I will have to wait until the next version of ios9 is issued before I can use iTunes.

Perhaps the issue is clearer on my machine as it is new and has never been on iTunes before and was therefore not recognised by iTunes even though it is set up and (apparently) backed up on iCloud. If it had been on iTunes before upgrade to ios 9, iTunes would have at least recognised the new iPad and might have given an option to backup from the 'pre-ios 9' version. Whether or not that restore would have worked is a different story.

I wonder if people who think they have backed up OK on ios 9 were to check to see what is actually in their iCloud if they too would find there are no backed up files.

Actually, your story is interesting. After all these years, Apple still can't do the cloud correctly. This issue appears to have been around since ios 9 beta days. I was only viewing it from the standpoint of having trouble backing up. I hadn't focused on the nightmare of setting up a new device or restoring one while iCloud is screwed up. Anyway, I guess people will start doing an extra backup to itunes if they care about their data. And my fears about ever depending on Apple to sync my calendar or contacts were not unjustified. When Apple loses your data, you're on your own.

Hi,

take a moment and thick about this Situation:

I Upgraded to IOS9, after I tried to make a Backup in the Cloud, the System tells me, there is not enough space left and comes up with a nice idea ...

Yepp -> go ahead and buy some more space .....

I don't want to think about, how many people did this, what the system told me to do (but I didn't ) ....

So these peoples spent money for a service, that was not necessary.

Now multiply this with as much user as you ..........

Bonus:

There are a lot scared people among us, which better buy a complete year only to be on the save side ..........

Just because the backup isn't running as it should and the system isn't correct telling what is goin on ....

I would like to know, how Apple will handle these problems ......

Same problem.

the devices on icloud, both iPhone and ipad are still ios8.

it hasn't been upgraded there.

seems like an apple bug!!!!

am weary about erasing backup and doing a new backup.

the existing backup from before the upgrade should be recognized.

icloud should have the upgrade information and recognize the devices as the same.

hope apple reads these posts and deals with the bugs!!!!

So, this happened to me also my last iCloud backup that happened successfully was before the upgrade to iOS 9. I have a local backup in iTune created the day I upgraded since then my automatic backup to iCloud just doesn't happen. When I select backup now it looks like the backup engine starts get the message that it is calculating space and sometimes it actually tries to start and gives me a time to completion but then eventually fails. Get proverbial backup could not be completed message.
