Unsupported Video Format iOS 9

I often import videos using the official Apple SD Card Reader, the videos are from my GoPro and have always worked.

my iPad is a 4th generation. I updated to iOS 9 last night and I can't get any of my imported videos to play. I just get the message "Unsupported Video Format", but before iOS 9 everything was fine.

This is a big problem......

Well here's the official response I got from Apple after several hours on the phone and video samples sent. It turns out that our problem is "unexpected behavior" from our pre-IOS 9 3rd gen iPads:

--------------

I was able to find the answer to your question! Thanks for your patience while I researched the information.
Information regarding your iPad’s video playback technical specifications can be found here: https://support.apple.com/kb/sp647?locale=en_US
According to this official Apple documentation, videos in 1080p 60fps are not supported. If you were able to play videos in 1080p 60fps high-resolution (non-LRV) in the past, then this would have been considered unexpected behavior - if strictly using the iOS’s native built-in app to play video that was imported to the device from the GoPro camera. The expected behavior for your iPad on iOS 8 should have been that the iPad would not have supported any video playback of a video in 1080p 60fps.
The technical specifications for the hardware of your iPad have not changed - even with iOS 9.
There are numerous 3rd party apps available on the App Store that are capable of broad video playback capabilites - however the native Apple video formats have not changed for the iPad 3rd generation.
You have confirmed during our previous conversation that you already understand what video formats from the GoPro camera will play on the iPad currently. For information about your GoPro camera settings, please refer to the GoPro documenation/user manual, or GoPro’s support website.

unfortunately that will not work for most GoPro enthusiasts. If I could play my 60fps 1080p videos on an older iOS, there shouldnt be an issue trying to play them now. I use my iPad to store and review videos when I am out in the field. I require 60fps due to the action shots that need slowed down during my edits. I really hope Apple addresses this issue. I will go buy a different tablet if that is the case. Does apple support monitor these threads?

I have been frustrated and nobody at Apple Technical Support is willing to help... I have raised this issue ever since I downloaded IOS 9 and now am UNABLE to view or edit videos I have taken with my 4k Camera . Before IOS 9 I had no problem.

I suggest NOBODY download IOS 9... if you are doing video editing..

Not impressed with the lack of follow thru with this problem nor anybody at APPLE willing to address this issue and resolve the problem.

If anybody from APPLE corporate, technical support, or customer care is willing to contact me.. I would be grateful

I have an apple iPhone, MacBook Pro, and iPad ...... have been loyal to Apple.. however if this is any indication of their

inability to address this problem.. I will contact Apple Corporate in Cupertino ....

Please pass this on... This is a major FLAW in the software ....

could you tell me if you found another way to resolve and watch again GoPro movies than downgrade I.O.S?

if not tell me how to downgrade iPad 4th generation please:)

this is ridiculous that apple doesn't take care about this problems!!!!!!

MY iPad 4G 128GB and GoPro 3+ are not cheap toys! It's useless when you can not EVEN watch movies!!!!!!!!

i only brought my iPad for my skydiving holiday to share videos with friends .it REALLY *****! APPLE!!!!!!!!!

I've also noticed this issue. It appears that in iOS9, Apple seem to have deliberately disabled native-app support (Photos, iMove etc) for anything over 1080-60 - unless you have the newest super duper iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 or soon to be released iPad Pro. This is now made even more obvious as support limitations are now explicitly listed in the app release notes for iMovie 2.2.1.

IOS7/8.x would happily play the higher resolutions (greater than 1080) content derived from the GoPro. Content previously loaded, and working on my iPad mini 2, now displays the "unsupported" banner message in iOS9. The hardware is obviously capable (as content would play before the iOS9.x updates) and apps with embedded players (such as winzip) still do play the higher resolution content, so this is definitely a case of Apple deliberately crippling the higher res content for the core native apps on any platform without A8 or later processor.

Apole give with one hand - and take away existing support with the other. Thanks Apple - you really know how to keep you loyal fan base happy...

Don't get me started on the locally cached email that won't load or display unless it has a network connection! This new email limitation, deliberate or bug, makes a complete mockery of off-line use when travelling.

I'm using iPad Air 2 and have the same kind of problem. Videos "appear" to be downloading from the camera, but don't show in the photos app. All I get is the single frame, but no video. The camera connector is sold upon the basis of downloading video. It no longer does. If this really is a question of moving the goalposts (re formats etc), then why no technical description?

Gutted, none of my videos now play, what's the point of upgrading if it's a backward step? Losing faith in Apple now as they seem to be just after your money by screwing you over time and time again, if not sorted soon I will be investing in a different tablet that actually does the simple things in life without trying to tie you in with Apple only products!

After getting the annoying "new software update available" daily I finally decided to update and now my Gopro videos will not play.

I spent A LOT of time on the phone with Apple trying to get this resolved. After being asked to "please hold" 2 times, and getting disconnected 2 times while on hold, I finally convinced a rep to stay on the line with me. She told me that Apple is aware of the problem and was working on it, but provided no ETA and could not provide any help at all.

Absolutely unacceptable, Apple. There should not be any problems playing a format that was easily played with IOS 8.

same issue here. I found an app called VConverter, which converts the mov 4k videos to MP4 format, so they can play on my iPhone 6s Plus. The problem is: the app does not "see" all the videos, only ones in camera roll folder. Other videos can be synched via iTunes file sharing in the App.. Another app allowing me to play the mov videos is Dropbox app(which can be seen by VConverter App.). And, of course , we can upload the videos to vimeo or Youtube and watch them from their respective apps as well.

Hello,

we got same issue with video from a go pro, only possible to view on iMovie, but on iMovie we can't see the video full screen so it is a little bit od.

We also trying to downgrade iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1 but the firmware is no longer signed by Apple. So we are ****** up with all my holidays movies and to recode all my movies on a new codecs will take me age.

What I can't understand is, if Apple for some hardware reason blocked these video on Photo to play why with same hardware we can read on iMovie, only maybe possible because isn't on fullscreen !!?

And why Apple don't tell us just why or if it's a bug or if it's a new restriction, we are looking to find a solution from days. It's a waste of time and money.

Dec 7, 2015 8:20 PM in response to Jay.Guadagni

I am having the same issue. My videos were playing and at times saying "downloading" (so I figured it was the import from iPhoto to "photos"). I updated with the latest iOS 9, and now it won't play any of my go pro videos. This is a HUGE HUGE problem apple. As someone who has been using my iPad as a storage device and an editor for my videos, this is a major letdown. This NEEDS to be fixed asap.
