I didn't read your whole article but i agree with you because I'm in the same ship.

I own an Ipad Air 1(since November 2013 even now it never have any wifi issue because the IOS still 8.3. Incase your wondering it doesn't have any problem with my Iphone 6 (with IOS 8.3) I brought it on September 2014.

So this year i brought an Iphone 6S Plus (gold rose lol). IT was so frustation for the past 3months. Because i spent like $900 on a phone that have wifi issue. Im so furious and ******. So today i bought the NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender. Pretty much it is an wifi extender as the name implies. It help your router to extend the the wifi. So my Iphone can safetly connect the wifi thru the NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender and wont get disconnect.

Now im happy because i can connect my iphone without any drop/wifi.

I am another very unhappy victim of this wifi problem. Apple really should have done something about this by now. I have wasted far too much time trying every "temporary" fix that has been mentioned here and elsewhere. I can't believe how much bad information some people post on these forums, and some continue posting it over and over. My family has several Apple devices that wont keep wifi connection for long at all. Seems to be as soon as the phone locks or goes to sleep (iPads as well). I have a strong wifi system and I've reset everything multiple times. It is the phone that is the problem. Stop wasting your time doing the silly "temporary" fixes. I'm going to waste a lot more of my time and try to speak with Apple directly about this. I will post my results after.

iOS devices, by design, drop WiFi 30 seconds after they go to sleep, unless they are connected to power. They have always worked this way from the beginning of iPhone time. The do this to preserve battery life. WiFi, unlike Cellular data, uses power continuously, whether data are being exchanged or not. It's not Apple's choice; it's the way the 801 standard dictates the protocol. If WiFi remained on when not being used the battery would be dead in a few hours.

After a lot of time with Apple Tech help, who was very friendly and concerned by the way, we tried every single fix known to man. Nothing worked. So, he said I had two options, #1 update to ios 9.2 which just came out and he thinks may fix wifi dropping out, or #2 go to the Apple store, which I have heard does no good. Well I am happy to report that, so far, the software update has solved my issue. It's only been one hour, but my wifi has not dropped once. That is far better than it's been doing for the past few weeks. I'll wait a few days and give a longer term update. But for now, I would suggest to anyone having this issue, don't spend your time with the band aid approaches. Download and install the latest ios version and hopefully that will do it for you.

I can tell you that after weeks of Googling, Apple Support, these boards and everything else, I gave up. I purchased an iPhone 6S which I immediately updated to 9.2, so far, so good, knock on wood.

There seems to be a circular discussion going on here, with a lot of different people having a lot of different issues. I'm not sure what anyone else has done, but I had an iPhone 6 running 9.2, and it still disconnected from my home Wifi on a regular basis. Moreover, it didn't give me the option to reconnect to my home Wifi network, or any other network, it simply did not show any networks as being available. And the only way to resolve that problem was to restart the device, which worked, each and every time, but was not exactly a fix. I had and have had no other issues with any other iOS devices and I have a bunch, they all connect and stay connected to Wifi just fine, it was just my iPhone 6, and that device thankfully is now gone.

Agree with Mr. Finch on Wifi disconnecting when not in use, that's normal, that's a good thing, I understand. On the fence about the wifi extender recommendation from 25fm65, I have that exact same extender, it definitely helped my home coverage area, but I still wonder if that extender somehow started the problem with my iPhone 6. I don't know how it could have, but I can remember when I first connected my iPhone 6 to that extender instead of the main wifi connection, and that's about the time when my problems began. Again, I cannot confirm or deny, I've connected the 6S running 9.2. to the extender then back onto the main wifi network, no problems. I'm just saying it is what it is, be careful.

My problem and it seems like some of the other folks' problems here is that I was never presented with the opportunity to reconnect to Wifi after it disconnected without having to restart the device. I have no idea if it was hardware, iOS, or what, I just know that Apple Support basically gave up on me and told me to either learn to live with it, or get a new phone. So I got a new phone.

I've got new issues now relative to iCloud and Camera Roll versus Photo Stream, which Apple Support is also unable to figure out or provide a solution for, so hopefully I am done with this particular issue so that I can move on to my next issue. Whatever happened to rock solid devices and support that got me moving over to Apple in the first place? 🙂

Good luck everyone, I'm done here, at least for now.

I've also noticed this problem as well. Everytime i turn my wifi on for my phone6S it drops my router and I can't use any other device. When the wifi is shut off on my phone i can have both laptops, ipad, watch netflix on tv its just the phone that kills the wifi? I have to shutdown everything and then i can use wifi on my phone but then i have to turn it off if I want to use anything else??

Seems that others are having similar issues maybe??

Any help would be great 🙂

Your problem is NOT the same as the problem discussed in this thread. The users who posted here are saying that the WiFi connection to their iPhone drops after connecting.

Your problem is your iPhone is preventing other devices from connecting to your router. I suggest posting a completely new message, rather than tagging on to an existing, off-topic thread. I'll watch for that new post and respond to it there.

Wanted to add some info as I has just today purchased a new iPhone 6s 64gb. I restored data to it from iCloud backup successfully. I now notice that wifi drops out if I'm not using the device. To get it going again I have to restart wifi. Is this intentional ?? It's annoying for sure. I previously had a 5s which worked perfectly even with version 9.2.1 (13D11). My wife is now using this after restoring her data from iCloud. I also have an iPad, so does my daughter, and macbookpro none of which which drop wifi. Only difference seems to be hardware!?? Hence my question about this 'feature' being intentional,

Every iOS device from the first iPhone on disconnects from WiFi when the phone goes to sleep, unless connected to power. Is this what you are observing, or is it something different?

That has not been my experience over many years and devices. E.g. When I open my iPad I do not have to go to settings/wifi to reconnect, same on my previous 5s and 4s before that. With my new current 6s when going to use it after it has been 'locked' I have no wifi indicator top left and I have to go to settings/wifi choose an available network and only then does wifi service recommence.

Dec 28, 2015 8:38 AM in response to coachfac

So I should add here, having thought it through again, that the difference is when I am e.g. in my home or office all my previous iOS devices seem to have kept me signed on when locked, which means I can instantly continue use without having to got to settings/wifi again. I hope this clarifies. It for sure is different. Of course when moving locations then I would have to choose a new connection.

There are two different things at issue. iOS does disconnect from WiFi 30 seconds after it goes to sleep. However, it should reconnect immediately when it wakes up. If it does not there's something wrong, somewhere. And even if you move to a different location it should connect to a router that it has connected to in the past within a few seconds. As a first step you should go to Settings/General/Reset - Reset network settings. You won't lose data, but you will have to manually reconnect to each router the first time you encounter it. You should also reboot your router, to reset the process in it that assigns IP addresses.
