After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

This appears to be a variation on this issue. IOS Mail caches the email, and then that cache may clear when space is needed. It will then download them ags again from the server.

Today we released IOS 9.1 for the iPhone with a POP bug fix, I would ask you to update to this version and let me know if the problem persists so I can follow up with our engineering department. Unquote

I just received email from the Sr. Tech as follows:

"IOS 9.1 has been released today, and he issue with pop3 accounts has been addressed."

I am now installing the iOS9.1 update with fingers crossed. The comment you received re caching email doesn't seem right though because whatever messages reside on the server would be of no consequence to messages that were lost from the Sent mailbox. Let's hope that was an unclear explanation and the iOS9.1 update does the trick. Good luck.

Indeed, here's hoping. The description of the update which mentions POP accounts is something about erroneous unread mail counts - that certainly doesn't address the wiping of content from one's device. Maybe the software is better written than the description of the problem it's supposed to be fixing.....

I've updated to iOS9.1 and so far it looks like an improvement for our POP emails. I have accessed emails on my iPhone and then deleted them from the mail server. I have then gone back to the phone and can access the email, which appears to have been stored on the phone. However, the emails that we're lost appear to have been permanently deleted from the phone, as I expected would be the case as the storage setting had shown a big drop on phone for iOS9.

So, hopefully a good resolution except for the permanently deleted emails.

I Have updated to ios9.1 and the issue still remains. E mails with attachments sent after the update are already saying message cannot be downloaded from the server as well as deleted emails in the trash bin. I see no improvement!

I have seen no improvement either. In fact, perhaps I missed this before, but I had an email I sent with a blind cc to myself with an image and once I was off wifi for about 15 minutes it disappeared but said tap to download. When I went back on wifi it wouldn't reload the image. It is still on the server but I no longer have access to it on the iPad. I looked at my storage on the app and it went from 140 mb prior to being offline to 39 mb.

What if I suffered a power outage and then could not re-download the body of an email on my device? Not to mention the number of times my device is redownloading emails. What a waste of cellular or wifi usage!! Fortunately, I have a computer where everything is working fine. I could now never recommend an iPad or iPhone to someone who doesn't have a computer.

That's too bad. Ironically I saw, briefly, an unread message count on Mail that was so large the whole number couldn't be shown. I suspect it's THAT glitch that the release notes are referring to - not actually fixing POP email.

I may still go to 9.1 tonight when I get home, if I can get a good iCloud backup to work (but that's the subject for another discussion).

I have just decided to use AltaMail as a backup email program. I keep emails that have attachments I wish to retain on my phone in AltaMail. Apple's mail program just deletes my email attachments when I empty my server. I have not tried 9.1 yet but I expect a continuing example of peremptory behavior by Apple.

Well you can tell APPLE. The update made no difference. Some emails I received yesterday with tracking numbers say NOT DOWNLOADED FROM SERVER.

Seems like Apple has successfully addressed this POP issue with 9.1; myself and 10 of our 12 iPhone 6 users within our company are now reporting there have been no further message download issues on the devices since the update yesterday.

Well done Apple - now please DO NOT break it again!

A serious problem - affecting my work , and it is makes one appear unprofessional when you go back to refer to a clients email .

So many emails not appearing anymore on my Ipad mini, no matter which email account I access . With Virgin too.

I know the emails were there, now this never ending message " This message has not been downloaded from the server " . If APPLE don't sort this out really quickly I will never trust Apple again ! APPLE YOU NEED TO RESPOND TO US .

I updated to iOS 9.1 this morning and subsequently sent an email with an attachment from my iPhone. 6 hours later, the email is still happily sitting in my sent folder intact -- message and attachment still there. I realise it is still early days, of course, but this looks promising. I'll get back with an update in 24 hours from now.
