After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

I previously advised that no one at Apple looks at discussions in the forums. If everyone will take a minute to make their problem know to Apple by using Apple's feedback link we should get the attention of those who can expedite releasing a fix.

This seems to be an issue with POP mail and there are a whole lot of us using POP. If enough of us register the issue with Apple via the feedback link it should get their attention. Thanks to those who have already done so.

I emailed a few photos to myself around 6 hours ago and they are still in the mail messages on the iPhone. I just tried doing an iCloud backup to see if they remained on the phone. When the backup finished, instead of seeing the date and time of the last backup what I got was "Last Backup Unknown". There are obviously iOS9 issues that go beyond loss of email messages. I am reporting this issue on Apples feedback link.

This is turning into a really frustrating problem - I have conversation threads where part of the input has disappeared, and the rest remained in situ. Apple really really need to get their act together on this one - in the meantime I'm having to forward significant emails from my main account to a secondary one also set up on my iPad to ensure vital stuff doesn't randomly vanish, a ponderous and annoying exercise.

If your iPad is running iOS8 then you should be fine. If it's been updated to iOS9 you would have the same problem as on the iPhone.

Let Apple know about this using this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Apple does not look at discussions in the user forums. Use of their feedback link is the only way to get Apple's attention. Thanks and good luck!

i understand how frustrating that is but you can do more than hope. Please use the links provided by Rontu2 and fill in Apple feedback explaining that you have the issue with iOS 9 and pop emails and then provide an explanation of how this has impacted you as an apple user. The only way to get this fixed is for it to become commercially in apple's interest to fix it and that means large numbers of vocal and affected users. Please use the apple feedback page.

Exactly the same for me. Out of 29 emails sent and replied to yesterday 21 this morning now have the dreaded comments the message has not been downloaded from the server. It is a disgrace that Apple have not even acknowledged the issue! They asked me to call my isp BT in the uk, but to no avail.i have now left 5 feedbacks via the feedback form in the past 24 hours. Come on, get it fixed as the mail app is no longer fit for purpose.

Update:

Today got a call from an Apple engineer who had me sync the iPhone to my MacBook Pro and extract certain error logs from the Library that were sent to Apple. This should enable their engineers to see exactly what happened. The engineer did say the issue with POP mail is not related to an ISP's POP server but rather to the individual devices we are using beig the iPhones. That is recognition of an issue with iOS9.

This morning I emailed photos to myself which showed in the Inbox and Sent mailbox with photos attached. A few hours later I found the two messages in the Inbox still had the photos but the messages in the Sent mailbox did not and showed the message has not been downloaded dialogue. I just checked and find the attached files are on the messages in the Inbox but not those in the Sent mailbox. The messages were sent 11 hours ago.

It is important to use the feedback link and I urge everyone to do so, and thank you to those who already have. Good luck.

no update from my conversation with senior Apple care in US, they did email me to say they are still looking at it. As with others losing messages before and after ios9 update across 2 accounts. No descernible pattern, some with attachments, some not. I even have some missing and some OK from the same sender. I think Apple must read these forums as they took down a previous post which contained Tim Cook's email. Unfortunately any messages affected are gone.

I'm sure everyone has noticed that iOS 9.0.2 pushed out today (?) did nothing to address this POP email issue (unfortunately!)

Have sent several feedback forms requesting help with this email issue but no one from Apple Care has acknowledged or responded. I tried calling Apple Care but the agent had no idea how to help or even what the issue was.

The only work around I have found is to keep emails on the server (or maybe it's just random), which for my needs, defeats the whole point of using POP. I don't know if Apple is trying to drive users to IMap or just an engineering issue, but there must be a lot of folks very inconvenienced by this email flaw. It's way more than an inconvenience to have permanently lost all my inbox and sent....!

I guess being frustrated will not bring back all my emails and hours of time spent trying to resolve this, but I did expect much more from Apple; and hope they respond soon with a fix or at least communicate with users on this issue...? This seems very similar to the OS X wi-fi issues that impacted many users this spring and was all over the media and took months to address with an update. I certainly will not be eager to "upgrade" to El-Capitan anytime soon after this; and Android is now sounding interesting for my next mobile device. Glad to hear that some members of this forum have been contacted by Apple at least....

Thanks everyone for sharing your insight and assistance on this issue and please continue to update with any news or solutions.

Many thanks for the help and information.

After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?
