iOS 9 wifi connectivity problems

I have two typically frequented wireless networks. The network at my house, and the network at my university. My personal network is encrypted using WPA2-Personal over both 2.4GHz, and 5GHz via 802.11ac. My university uses WPA2-Enterprise over a similar protocol. After updating to iOS 9, neither my iPhone 6 plus, nor iPad Air 2 can consistently connect to the university's wireless network. I noticed that resetting the network settings temporarily solved the problem on my iPhone, and it was able to connect for a few hours; but has never solved the problem on my iPad. When I left for about an hour, and came back to the university, my iPhone again could not connect to the internet; and my iPad following suit. Two outcomes are occurring: either after the encryption key is submitted, the iPhone doesn't acknowledge anything besides asking for the encryption key again; or it says incorrect passcode. It would appear as though the encryption key handoff is either timing out, or incompatible with the network. Most likely, iOS 9 has inadvertently lost support for specific types of 802.11x networks, or it's simply a bug.

Note:

  • I have confirmed the encryption key by disconnecting, and reconnecting on my MacBook Pro: to rule out the possibility the passphrase has changed.
  • Re-Booted both devices
  • Cycled Wifi (turned off, and back on)
  • Reset the network settings on both devices.
  • Soft-Reset (Holding down the power and home buttons) on both devices.

Because both devices had trouble simultaneously it is hardly likely that it is a device-specific issue - which rules out a factory reset.

I have read similar problems with other people on the support forums. Hopefully Apple can patch this issue with a quick iOS 9.0.1 before the release of iOS 9.1. I'd like to use my wifi at my school 😢

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you are having similar problems... Best of luck!

DO NOT UPGRADE iPHONE 6 TO iOS 9.2 IF YOU HAVE AN AT&T WIRELESS ROUTER

Verified the problem is certain iPhone 6's manufactured in 2014 updated with iOS 9.2 (and 9.2.1) and a hardware or software compatibility issue with AT&T issued Arris NVG589 wireless routers. Apparently AT&T is not yet aware of a problem or a fix.

  • wiped network settings from two phones, failed to connect
  • wiped and reinstalled factory iOS 9.2.1, failed to connect
  • restarted and reset two individual NVG589 at two separate locations, failed to connect
  • changed NVG589 SSID to all lower-case alpha-numeric characters, failed to connect
  • changed NVG589 wireless password to all lower-case alpha-numeric characters, failed to connect
  • connected to Linksys WRT1900 successfully
  • connected to Dlink DIR601 successfully
  • two other identical iPhone 6's still running iOS 9.1 connect to NVG589 successfully.

There is most likely a wireless chip vendor that has a certain logic coded into the chip used on a particular model that is incompatible with the latest iOS security settings and these AT&T routers, or the chip itself is failing.

I have had an internet connectivity problem with my Ipad mini over the last days, for unknows reasons, and following the advice found here, i.e. uninstalling and re-installing my VPN has solved the problem, at least for now.. So I have a working Ipad Mini that connects to the wifi network, stays connected, and is protected by the re-installed SurEasy VPN!

One week later, lost connectivity to all the other WIFI routers also. In an attempt to download and revert to iOS 9.1, I turned off FIND MY IPHONE. And magically, all WIFI connectivity was restored. I then headed directly to the liquor cabinet 🙂 Turned find my iphone back on, lost WIFI again. Hate to leave it off, but I figure data overages would be more expensive than a replacement phone. Surprised more people haven't experienced this issue.

At home when my Moms iphone 6 is connected to our home network it connects and disconnects.

When you open up settings you can see it happening. It connects 5 sec then disconnects 5 sec...

When I click the forget setting and then try to reconnect it stalls out when making the connection.

It say's, Wrong Password. It is not the wrong password. No other device on our network has any problem staying connected. When I 'forget' the network with my android phone and reconnect it works fine. The only way i got the iphone back on the network was restarting the router. It will then work for a few hours, then goes back to connecting and disconnecting every 5 seconds. We have cox cable and fast internet. All other devices work at fast speed with no disconnect problems. My Mom will end up using all data on her plan without even knowing it. 5 sec high speed internet, then 5 sec data plan. Is anyone else having this issue?

Any ideas what this can be?

I finally got an ipad air 2 last week and when I took it to my IS department at work they said they are having issues with the iphones/ipads IOS 9 working with the internet and that I have to just wait for apple to fix the bug. On my company's website it says this,

The LVMC complimentary WiFi available for patients and guests does not play well with iOS 9 devices. So if any of our patients or visitors have upgraded their iPad or iPhone to iOS9 they will not be able to use the LVMC-FreeNet.

This also affects staff who utilize our complimentary LVMCStaffNet.

We are waiting for Apple to fix their bug (as we are not the only company experiencing this problem) and we appreciate everyone's patience until then.

😟

Hey guys! Just had the same problem and kinda find a solution for myself (i dont have any VPN apps on the phone so i can confirm from where the problem is)...here we go:

Settings>Wi-Fi

when u connect to your wifi ssid press the "i" button... i noticed my IP address was not a regular one (as 192.168.1....), and even the renew the lease didnt help so from DHCP i switch to static and filled the information:

IP: 192.168.1.109 (i checked in my router which address is free)

Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0

Router: 192.168.1.1 (i own linksys router)

thats it! DNS came automatically! went to home screen and turned airplane mode ON/OFF (5sec) and internet was back on!!

hope it helps...and all our problems are fixed soon by apple!!

Um my SSID is not hidden and there is no mac filtering on my router settings

I am having the same problem. I reset network settings, I connect for a while...then trouble. And not only does my device stop connecting, but it shuts all other devices, including laptops and desktops, on my network. ANNOYING. Have tried different DNS, statis IP...every solution stated on this thread, and nothing.

Apple? Any feedback as to when this will be fixed?
