iOS9 Airdrop to Mac not working

Trying to connect iPhone 6+ iOS9 to 2013 iMac OS X 10.10.5 via Airdrop but not showing up on iMac or iPhone, worked perfectly before iOS 9.


iPhone can Airdrop to another iPhone and iMac can Airdrop to another Mac, but not iPhone to/from Mac.


iOS update was originally done OTA and have reinstalled through iTunes.


Have tried all suggestions I have come across but still they won't connect.


Anyone have similar problems?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 21.5 in 2.9GHZ i5 16 GB

I just got a new iPhone 6s last weekend and my AirDrop is to working. It was working fine with my iPhone 5S with the latest version of El Capitan. I tried the suggestion about restrictions and that did nothing. Between constant app lock ups since the latest El Capitan update and now this issue with AirDrop, I'm thinking El Capitan still has some major issues!!!

For me it started working after a long hard work 🙂


I'm now sure bluetooth is responsible for the connection. After reading all the above replies, I deleted bluetooth plist. After that I wanted to use bluetooth as receiver for the hotspot on iPhone. But it was not pairing. So I opened bluetooth setting and paired iPhone 6s plus and macbook pro retina manually. To my surprise airdrop started working. Then I switched off bluetooth and wifi for mac and iPhone and restarted the mac. And tried airdrop again. This time it connected without any hassle.


It is important that iPhone is shown as paired in the bluetooth setting on mac.

Hello Folks!

Without jokes - Just upgraded IOS to 9.3 on iphone 6s. But still experiencing the issue with finding iphone in airdrop.

Here are the steps that i follow. If i do something not right, please let me know:
1. Go to Finder on Macbook Pro and click Airdrop (making sure the laptop is connected to Wifi and Bluetooth is on)

2. On Iphone turn airdrop on by selecting "discoverable to everyone".

3. Check Airdrop on Macbook Pro. It does not show any discovered device.

4. Go to bluetooth preferences on Macbook pro and remove old devices from the list. After 5-10 seconds Macbook finds the iphone.

5. Click "Pair" across the device- popup shows the verification code. Asks to confirm on iphone by clicking "confirm" button.

6. Click "Confirm" on Iphone and immediately see that macbook pro name displays on iphone with status "Not Connected" (in My Decices list)

7. Returning back to Bluetooth preferences on macbook pro and see the same message below the iphone name saying "Not Connected"..


Whats up with all that ? Am I missing some required step? 😕

So tired of this debugging stuff. All i demand is an "old APPLE" quality.

This worked for me. Changed the NetBIOS Name under WINS in advanced network settings, and my 6+ and Air2 showed on my late 2013 iMac under AirDrop. Changing the NetBIOS name back again also works. I can't add more info since the error is gone now. The 2 handheld devices could always see each other. It was only the iMac late2013 the was blind.

Ok, here is an update. I've tried to check airdrop connectivity between the same iphone 6s and friend's iphone 6. Works without issues.

Then used friend's iphone 6 to connect with Macbook pro. But unfortunately seeing the same problem. First it finds it. Ask to confirm the code. Confirming the code and then immediately it is showing the device as "Not connected".


ISO2016, if it would have been connected then i would see it in the finder. However in my case the finder--> Airdrop option is empty (simply has not devices displayed).

From having been happy to get Airdrop working again with a router change the Airdrop between phone > mac has again stopped working, this time it seems, courtesy of the IOS 9.3 update. It WAS working from an iPhone 5S which was still on 9.2.1 but stopped on that too when I accepted the latest OSX update. Now neither phone will Airdrop to the Mac nor can the Mac to them. The phones can to each other. Bored of the whole Airdrop fiasco now so I'm giving up and will just check occasionally to see if it's working. Wasted too many hours on this as it is.


Seriously beginning to think my next phones will by Nexus or Galaxy S7. Android may be clunky as **** but at least basic functionality that I use a lot WORKS!!!!

Hoped that IOS 9.3.1 might fix this issue. WRONG. Trouble is you read these threads and spend hours trying tinkering fixes that you shouldn't ever have to do if this worked properly:


Change computer name

Reset Network Settings

Turn laptop firewall off

Delete Bluetooth.plist files

Toggle wifi / bluetooth on / off

Rename the phone

Switch to Everyone under Airdrop

Hard reset the phone

etc etc etc


All to no avail and it's such a time sink!!! Far better if Apple just fixed it or pulled the functionality until it works!!!

So, for me it's now working again iPhone <> Mac.


I remember ages ago I some problems with wifi connection and fixed it my changing the security type. So though I'd give a roll of the dice on that again. I went into my router and disabled security settings. This of course forces both the Mac and the iPhone to log on to the router again as it now has to be joined as an insecure device.


Presto. Mac shows up on the iPhone and iPhone on the Mac when trying Airdrop 🙂 . I then went back in and re-enabled wifi authentication and no problem again. The phone and Mac can still see each other.


What was interesting is that the OTHER iPhone, which was also having problems with Airdrop was not touched throughout this. I never toggled it to log onto the network when security was disabled. But, after I was all done I tried that phone too and Airdrop is now there too, phone <> Mac. So in my case at least, I'm thinking it's something to do with network settings on the Mac because resetting network settings on both phones never worked but one of the phones was working AFTER the Mac was made to log on to the router was insecure, and BOTH phones worked once the Mac was made to log on the the router once it was again secured.


I'm wondering therefore if it's a Mac / wifi router association thing.

To test a bit further, I tested another router I had to see if the disable/re-enaable security would work on that too. No go. That seems to be just a router incompatibility issue. BUT. I then re-connected the router that was working. But now it wasn't. So, I deleted it's profile under wireless advanced. Made a new connection to it with the Mac. Still no go. Then, went into the router again. Disabled security. Presto. The phone shows up again. Re-enabled security, phone <> Mac working, both phones.


Providing all the detail in case it helps other or anyone from Apple trying to sort this. Must be some kind of networking issue that's fixed once you force the Mac to first log on to the router not secured and then again once it is secured.

Really bizarre this. Had a temporary change of router yesterday as the ISP were checking for a fault. Put the original router back, connected, no air drop. Logged on to router admin, disabled security. Joined the network with the Mac as a now insecure network. Airdrop came back. Never even touched the phone this time. Just left wifi and bluetooth on.


Re-enabled security. Logged on again in the secure network. Airdrop still there and working. Until it stops next time. I'll check daily to see if it just drops off. PITA having to do this every time to get this working. Def something with the 9.3 / 9.3.1 update because never had this issue before once I changed back to the working router. Post 9.3, loads of grief. Beginning to think I'll just forget about Airdrop in it's current state. Just not worth the hassle.

Hi, I have the same issue as you under 9.3 and 9.3.1 with my iPhone 6S and MBPr.

What I did: I disconnected from any WiFi network on my MBPr and my i6s, let the wifi and bluetooth on, and voila: AirDrop works

I noticed this issue after updating to 9.3 and meanwhile, my iPhone 5 AirDrop under iOS 8 works smoothly with my MBPr
