You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)

If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.

Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

I had originally backed up all three of my devices after the upgrade but then the problem returned. My iPhone & iPad 2 finally backed up automatically but after trying to backup my Air 2 ( over 8 hours that kept stating 4 hours remaining) I gave up. I will try again tonight & see if it backs up automatically.

The problem seems to come & go and seems to definitely be an issue with iCloud.

As far as your contacts syncing, make sure you are using the same default account, After one of the updates, my iPad 2 changed the default account to gmail so when I edited a contact on my iPhone (default is iCloud) the change did not show on my iPad 2.

Here is the scenario I followed that fixed the issue for me after contacting Apple Support for two weeks.

1- doing all kind of restarting my iPhone and re-setting network

iCloud Backup Failed

1- update iPhone iOS to the latest

iCloud Backup Failed

1- changing the iPhone Name

iCloud Backup Failed

1- trying to delete the 0kb backup (not possible)

2- trying to disable apps backup in Setting --> iCloud --> Storage --> Manage Storage --> my iPhone backup (0kb) (not possible)

iCloud Backup Failed

The success scenario

1- Backing up my iPhone using iTunes.

2- Taking copy of all photos and important files.

3- putting the iPhone in DFU mode

4- restore the iPhone through iTunes with the latest iOS (9.1)

5- Setting up as new iPhone.

6- backup to iCloud (success. the backup size almost 16mb. the 0kb backup disappeared)

7- restore my iPhone backup back from iTunes to get all my stuff

8- backup to iCloud Fail 😟

9- trying to disable apps backup in Setting --> iCloud --> Storage --> Manage Storage --> my iPhone backup (16mb) ("Photo Library" disabled from the 1st try: Success )

10- backup to iCloud SUCCESS.

I was affected by this too. Worse than that, even trying to back up my phone to iTunes on my PC was very unreliable too - it often didn't work, even after a PC restart and an iPhone (5S) hard reset.

I then updated to iOS 9.1 and still had the same problem. A few days later, when I was trying to backup to the PC, it offered an iTunes and iCloud update, so I downloaded them, did a successful backup to the PC and then iCloud backups started working again. All very odd.

I know some people who've upgraded to iOS 9 and not had the iCloud backup problem, so it doesn't affect everyone.

I have not been able to back up my iPhone 6 for weeks I deselected all Apps etc it would still not back up I then switched them all back on and did what you said to do switch off the iCloud back off and back on it still did not want to back up so i did it again and it seems to be working so I think it is a case of persuading the iPhone 6 to do it the last update has caused an issue with back up even logging the phone into my mac it would not back up it kept saying restore and this was not something I wanted to do I must admit I have more problems with my iPhone 6 in the last 6 months than I ever did with my iPone 4s which I had for 3 years very sad really. BUT Thank you for your advice

I am still having this issue. I noticed it stopped backing up a month or so ago, I tried trouble shooting (turned EVERYTHING off), deleted everything, rebooted, logged out, etc., only left 1 thing to back up, "NOTES", which should be NOTHING in regards to taking up space. STILL cannot back up. Obviously, out of desperation I had to clear up room on my computer and back up. However, after being on a call w/ Apple support for HOURS, they were also unable to figure out what's wrong. I was told my issue will be passed on to the 'engineers' and since then NOTHING. I've just been advised to back up to my laptop instead. Seriously???
