You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)

If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.

Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

Winston is right. There are a bunch of different problems that people are running in to: 0 bytes shown in backup, incorrect space taken by backup, iOS 9 backup failing to complete, only iOS 8 backups being shown, etc. Whilst Apple are working on fixes, iOS 9 iCloud backup failure is not a certainty: the iCloud backups will work every now and then on iOS 9.x, and it is possible to retrieve or restore from that data.

Try to reboot your Mac and your iPhone. I'd recommend not to use iCloud backup at this moment and stick with iTunes.

For me, ALL devices with 9.01 WILL fail iCloud backup:

- iPhone (5S, 6 and 6+)

- iPad Mini 3

- iPad Air (1 and 2)

Some of these were synced to iTunes and some were not. The iPad Air 1 was never backed up to iCloud. The only consistent thing is 9.01. Googling it show that people with 9.01 failed the iCloud backup. This seems to be the "App Thining" issue that caused the iCloud Backup bug.

Interestingly, I picked up an iPhone 6S Plus and iPad Mini 4, which still have 9.0 and iCloud backup WORKS.

I had the same problem, I set up my 6s and realized that I could not back up to iCloud. I then checked my iPad and iPhone 6 and those have not backed up to the iCloud since 9/16 the day I updated to 9.0. After spending way to long troubleshooting and then even longer troubleshooting with tech support, I figured it out. Tech support by the way thought it was my apple time capsule so that was a 2 hour necessary detour to network support and then back to iOS support for the 3rd time during the phone call ugh.

So the answer is you need to go to settings, iCloud sign out. Then sign in, back up now and it worked on all 3 devices.

I am waiting for my apple advisor to call back so that I can tell her that I don't need this sent to the engineers as I have resolved my own issue.

I really hopes this helps everyone!

Same issue. Next backup 0, No "Backup Now" button...all the normal stuff, none of the "suggestions" worked. My Air is NOT updated and working fine on the backup. I am sorry but come guys!! I get and understand these updates are HUGE and complicated and I totally am supportive of dealing with rollouts having issues (god knows I have been on the other end a few times) but something as simple as "phone does not back to Icloud up after upgrade" would be something they should have noticed and at least stated that "You may or may not have issues with backup to Icloud after this update...we are working on it!" I even waited to 9.1 to do the update to avoid some of these "LARGER" (yes I am yelling...did they notice?...;-) and obvious issues. Anyway......heading to ITunes for now till its sorted out..(Idea!! get some of the 600 guys working on Titan to ID some of these things before the release..I know they are just Car Guys but even they would have noticed the backup was not working! ). Love ya Apple!!!

If your device is managed by your company via an MDM then it might be causing your issue. I found that our MDM was set to not allow docs to be sync'd to iCloud and something in iOS 9 is causing this to block backups in iCloud as well. This is a change in iOS 9 that didn't exist in previous versions of iOS. Check with your companies mobile administrator to see if they can verify and maybe fix this for you.

same issue for me. Along with others such as contacts not syncing. I was on chat last night for over an hour and the problem could not be solved for the contacts and calendar. Have been advised to completely restore phone back to original settings and start all over again. Will try it when I have time. Not looking forward to that task now I cannot do a backup to icloud either. Guess I will use the itunes method. Apple, please sort these glitches out!! Thank you!
