Contact name missing from text message since iOS 9 upgrade

Contacts are saved but since the iOS 9 update, when I get a text message, no name appears only the telephone number in the notification screen? But I open the text, the name appears at the top, just when initial text notification comes through.

Bizarrely this only happens with a few people in my contact list.

I have tried a soft reset. Network settings reset and a re install of iOS 9.

I have also deleted the contact and re added them.

I have changed the number in the contact page as +44 7xxx xxxxxx, I have also changed it to 07xxx xxxxxx.

Nothing is working.

Is anyone having the same issues and if so are there any workable fixes. This is driving me insane.

I have an iphone 5s 16gb.

Two years later and I ran into this problem on my iPhone 6 (which is 2-3 years old now). Anyways, my phone had a glitch where it was stuck on "searching..." instead of connecting to Verizon. I did a network reset and fixed that issue.

All of my contacts were messed up after, where they were saved but number showed xxxxxxxxxx instead of (xxx)xxx-xxx. Somehow this messed up the recognition in messages.

To fix this I went to settings, general, language and region, switched to Sweden region, clicked continue. Screen loaded for a few seconds. When it came back up I switched back to United States. Free this my numbers were switched back to the correct (xxx)xxx-xxxx

Hopefully this works for anyone else that experiences this later on down the road. I believe this works on Mac also but not sure.

An update on my situation-

i gave up, reset my phone and started as new.

Massive pain but not only did it fix the issue but also just made my phone run so much better.

Its obviously an error my iCloud back up developed at some point. I have always used the same back up from back when I got my first iPhone back in the 3GS days.

This is not what I said but as usual with every upgrade something else goes amiss . Voice recognition absolutely horrible. Hyper thinking of the machine absolutely horrible.

I had this happen after a restart of my phone today. Some contact names appeared in text message history, others didn't. I had turned off Contacts in my icloud settings intentionally because some contacts were pulling into contacts twice, I believe because I use MS Exchange for contacts. To fix the contact name disappearance issue, I turned iCloud contacts back on in Settings | iCloud, exited, and verified that names were back in the text message history (turning it on repopulated the contact names in text message history). Then I went back into iCloud settings and turned off contacts; when asked if I wanted to delete iCloud contacts that had been saved to the phone, I answered "yes" (again, this is because some contacts were listed in contacts twice.

1. tried hard reset (HT201559)

2. tried turning off dial assist (helped with one contact)

3. went to one message that showed a number > tapped on " i " > surprisingly it showed the Name! Clicked on the name > added the international prefix (+1) for the number > save

Messages inbox was then updated > all showed names!

hello all,

I just upgraded my 6 plus to 10.2 and face the same issue, the names do not show up on all app including message, phone history...

I read all your solutions and tried all of them but none of them work.

I just tried to log out facebook account and amazingly it works, all the names show up on all app.

pls try.

Helped for me. Thanks!

Picked one message which didn't show name and changed contacts phone number, in this case i took off the +358 country prefix as it was there. All messages from everybody got names back!

Go to the contact thats not showing up - go to edit .. change the type of phone for the number to 'iphone' and thats it .. repeat for all similar contac

Late reply, but one solution to this based on my experience and other forum posts is to go to iCloud settings and toggle Contacts off then back on.

I know this is a response to a thread from 2016, but your iCloud trick worked for me on iOS 10.3.1
