Saving AT&T grandfathered unlimited data plan

I am moving to T-Mobile, and am selling my grandfathered unlimited data plan for my iPhone with AT&T. However, I'd like to keep my old number. I've read that some people can port over the old number while simultaneously changing their phone number with AT&T. The end result is you have your original number with T-Mobile, and you have a new number on your grandfathered plan with AT&T that you can sell.

Is this still possible? Does anyone have a success or failure story of you or someone you know? What are the details for how it's done?

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that's possible. Even if you transfer responsibility for the line, it will lose its grandfathered status.

I've verified with AT&T that it will still be grandfathered if I call them rather than do it online. The question at hand is whether I can sneakily keep my old number.

AT&T says it's impossible, but according to http://verizonforums.com/threads/sell-your-verizon-unlimited-data-plan-keep-your -number.363163/#axzz3lsgQyD78, there are some success stories (at least with Verizon). I'm sure Verizon would say it's impossible too. It's just a sneaky work around in the system.

How do you sell a plan? This is my first time, but if http://r.ebay.com/MFoUpa is true, it's quite a nice parting gift.

Its called a transfer of financial lability or a transfer of billing liability. I've never heard of AT&T allowing that without the number going with the transfer, and they normally will only do it if both parties come into a corporate store and do it in person.

People can try to sell just about anything in eBay - it's basically become a dumping ground for every online scam imaginable. I certainly would not count on taking over someone's account based on some online auction. For one thing, you're not "buying" nor "selling" anything - you are transferring legal responsibility and financial liability for an account. If you get it wrong and that account goes delinquent, AT&T will go after the account holder of record, which may well still be you If AT&T did not formally and officially authorise the TOFL and record it properly in their account billing system.
