Q: Missing volume icon since ios9 upgrade

my volume icon is gone when I reopen my iPad using my Smart Cover. To get it back I need to manually turn off and on using the side switch. I can manually raise and lower the volume using the switch toggle, but there is no icon that shows the volume being raised or lowered. If I don't close my iPad with the Smart Cover then I have no problem. Even when I close my Smart Cover, the clicking noise it is making is different from before ios9.  I've tried restarting a few times and it fixes it until I close it with the Smart Cover then the problem reappears Again. I know it's not the Smart Cover as I've tried it on someone else's iPad and it works fine. Any advice would be helpful.

Force restart the device. No data is lost. It is very much like rebooting a computer.

Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the scree.

i have tried that and it fixes the problem for the time been. But if I close with the Smart Cover and reopen it,  the missing volume icon problem comes back.

Have you tried resetting all settings? No data is lost when you do this, but you have to enter all device settings again including WiFi passwords. This action resets all of the settings back to default out of the box settings. It is sort of like rebooting the settings. The iPad reboots on its own when you reset settings.

    Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.

i tried the resetting all settings and it fixed one problem. Now I can swipe up from the bottom and adjust the volume and the icon will pop up on the screen. So  that works now. But if I try to adjust the volume by using the toggle on the side then I still get no icon When I first open up the Smart Cover. Thanks for your suggestions, not sure what to do now? Maybe live with the way it is.

yeah I don't know what to do now. I've tried everything. I'm guessing it is a software problem from ios9. I'm hoping it gets fixed in ios9 .1

I Don't know if the Smart Cover has anything to do with this. I have seen several people reporting this same problem about the volume indicator disappearing since they updated their devices. Try removing the Smart Cover and see if everything works OK. That's not a fix, it's just a troubleshooting step to try and narrow the problem down. If the cover is the culprit, it would be worth reporting to Apple as a bug in the iOS.

ive had another person contact me with the same exact problem. When I remove the Smart Cover and manually shut off my iPad, everything works fine. But I have tried my Smart Cover on another iPad and it works fine. But I've tried another Smart Cover on my iPad and I still get the missing icon problem. Like I said before, I'm getting a wired low pitched clicking noise when I close my Smart Cover. Something is not right. Even my friends iPad is making the same sounds. I would like apple to know about this problem so it can be fixed. Is there a way I can do this?.  I'm not the most computer savvy person. Thanks for all your advice tonight.

The only thing that you can do is to report this in the iPad feedback site here.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

When you get to the Feedback Type menu, you can select Bug Report. When you get to iOS version, it isn't showing iOS 9 yet, so simply add that in the description section where you talk about the problem. Apple doesn't respond to these reports except in very rare instances, but they do read the feedback and if more people report, the better the chances of getting it resolved.

Im having the issue too, it's the Smart Cover. If you sleep and wake your iPad from the power button, the volume icon returns each time, as soon as you use the Smart Cover to sleep and wake your iPad, it disappears. The only option is to switch off lock/unlock in setting and use the power button until Apple fix it. Or just use it as is and guess.

    Issue has been reported here:

iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

It's a bug that affects the iPad mini 2 and the iPad Air 2 (at least). You are not alone and the only solution to get the volume icon back is to NOT use the Smart Cover to sleep the device. If you do, you can get the volume icon back by sleeping the device, then waking it via the Sleep/Wake switch.

I now see that it was that posted in that topic as well.

I thought this worked for me, but then I discovered that it worked for only one app.  The volume level icon does not show up in any other apps on IPad Air2 or Mini since IOS 9 update. I haven't updated my phone yet, and now I am not going to until these and other bugs I've read about are worked out.
