Q: iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

Just putting this out there for those searching for the same issue...

There is currently a bug in iOS 9 that prevents the on-screen volume indicator from being displayed on-screen when the device is wakened from sleep using the Smart Cover/Smart Case.  The volume buttons still do in fact adjust the volume as they should, but there is no on-screen volume indicator that shows the volume and it's adjustment level. The workaround is to sleep the device again, but waken it using the Sleep/Wake switch rather than the Smart Cover...or simply wake the device using the Sleep/Wake switch in the first place. This has been tested on two iPad mini 2's and an iPad Air 2.

AM having this same exact problem. It's a pain having to sleep the device every time I open the Smart Cover. I like using my Smart Cover for the ease and to protect the screen. I've sent in a report a bug to Apple so I'm hoping this gets enough attention for them to address it. Im not the only one who's having this problem as I've been contacted by a few people. Do you notice when you close your Smart Cover it is making a different clicking noise from before the ios9 update. Im getting a low single click rather than the loud double click as before.

guess that i am not alone... I have the exact same problem with my iPad air and I was thinking there might be something wrong with my device. regarding the click sound, sometimes it would give a low single click especially when i close the cover hastily and sometime it would be the usual loud double click when closing the cover slowly. not really sure tough but the sound is definitely different before the update.

the only thing I can think of is to report this as a bug to the product feedback section in customer service. That way if a lot of us report this problem, then they will have to address it.

It's a pretty obvious issue and very easy to reproduce. With all the public testing that was supposedly done, I really wonder how these kinds of issues make it through to a final release...I found it within a day after running the iOS 9 final release.

yes, it is really disappointing for a final release of iOS 9... I found it right away after trying to watch a movie right after updating... I updated to the iOS 9.1 beta to see if the issue is being addressed and nope... It is still there.... Easily reproducible as ****...

Just want to note that I'm not seeing this with an iPad Mini (original). If I open the cover and use the buttons on the home screen, I see the indicator with a "Sound Effects" label. Within an app w/ audio (e.g. Music) I get the indicator with a "Volume" label.

    Yes, I'm on iOS9.

ON my iPad 4 , I am having the problems.

on my iPad 2 , I am not having the problems.

do you also get a low single click when you sleep/wake your device? Before iOS 9 I would get a loud double click sound. I am getting this issue on both my devices.

I have lock sounds turned off (I find it annoying). I just turned it on and it sounds like a quick double to me. I can't compare it to earlier because, as I said, I have it disabled.

try turning off the change with button options at sound and alerts option and close the Smart Cover and open again... Then press the volume button... The hud will not show but the sound can still be adjusted

It has been reported (I have not personally tested yet) that iOS 9.0.1 does not resolve the issue. This issue should be reported to Apple here:

    *Apple feedback link*

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Also note that restoring the device as new (not using a previous backup) does NOT resolve the issue so don't bother trying that...I tried it myself so I have first-hand knowledge.

I have personally verified that iOS 9.0.1 does not resolve the issue...maybe next time.

9.1 beta 1 doesn't resolve this issue either... Don't think the beta 2 will solve it too...  Is it really so not obvious? How could none of the iOS developer get the bug... Instead they found a list of other bugs that I don't even know exist... Or maybe no body uses the Smart Cover anymore except for us?

that is unbelievable that it would not be resolved in next update. I found these bugs with the Smart Cover within a minute of the iOS 9 update. so now i have a Smart Cover that is doing nothing! Nothing smart about it now I guess.

Volume is still adjustable but meanwhile when we wait a fix the quickest way to have volume indicator back is lift up the control center, that brings indicator back.
