iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

Just putting this out there for those searching for the same issue...

There is currently a bug in iOS 9 that prevents the on-screen volume indicator from being displayed on-screen when the device is wakened from sleep using the Smart Cover/Smart Case. The volume buttons still do in fact adjust the volume as they should, but there is no on-screen volume indicator that shows the volume and it's adjustment level. The workaround is to sleep the device again, but waken it using the Sleep/Wake switch rather than the Smart Cover...or simply wake the device using the Sleep/Wake switch in the first place. This has been tested on two iPad mini 2's and an iPad Air 2.

In the meantime, you can always enable Auto-Lock and set it to 2 minutes so the device will lock itself after that predetermined time:

Settings/General/Auto-Lock (2, 5, 10, 15 minutes or never)

I have no idea. I suppose it will get fixed eventually. In the meantime, please report the issue to Apple...the more that report, the better.

This bug apparently does not effect all iPads. The volume control on my iPad Air running iOS 9.0.1 works correctly when the iPad is wakened from sleep by opening the Smart Cover.

Thanks for that report, Ralph9430. Makes it more difficult then to pinpoint. If you look at the post above by Sh1r3sy, she states: "I Have the exact same issue here on the iPad Air however my sons iPad Air 2 does not suffer from this problem"

Odd things going on around here in iOS land. 😐

Hi,

If you play with sound in Control Center, the volume bar is back, and you can see it when use the buttons. But it disappears again after using the cover again.

seeing that this problem does not occur to everybody, there is chance that apple will never fix this bug if there is not significant amount of ppl experience it... I would suggest all user that has similar problem to report it to apple so that the the ios developer could fix it... in the mean time I guess we all have to live with it as part of the new upgraded "feature"...

I had the same issue on my ipad mini. I went into Sounds and turned on Change With Buttons and now it works properly.

Here's an aside (included for additional info) for those keeping track. If you use a passcode on your iPad and you use a Smart Cover as well, you will never see this issue. This is because even though you wake the device with the Smart Cover, the device is not unlocked until you enter the passcode. So in reality, you are actually unlocking the device using the passcode & not the Smart Cover itself.

If you do not use a passcode (I personally do not), the device is unlocked immediately when opening the Smart Cover. This is when the issue manifests itself.
