How do I update the firmware for the DVD burner?

I'm having lots of problems with burning DVDs recently; I'm getting the message: This disc can’t be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new blank disc (error code 0x80020063).' I'm using Verbatim DVD-R disks - as was recommended on this forum - so I wrote to Verbatim to ask why around a quarter to half the disks on a spindle were being rejected with this message. They asked if the burner firmware is up to date. How do I check this, & how do I update it? I have the Apple update installer, so I would expect to get a message if something needs updating.

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

(if it requires an update, which some of you think it does not)

If definitely does not need an update. This is not Windows which needs updates frequently. If there is an update necessary, it is usually wrapped into the next OS update - there are very few - if any - separate updates, especially not for a Superdrive. And you won't find one going to the link you posted.

The app store will show all updates that are available for your Mac hardware model and your installed OS version. If none are listed, there aren't any.

You can find all the available manual downloads here:

FWIW, the built in Superdrives are quite unreliable and finnicky; I've had to have two replaced within the warranty period and started to use a reliable external drive quite a few years ago.

Thanks, but I just went onto the Apple Store & I cannot see anywhere how to update the burner firmware?

If anything needs updating, you will see it under Apple menu > App Store > Updates.

If nothing is there, everything is current.

There are just some snazzy visuals trying to sell you their latest products; nothing helpful at all about updating firmware!

Click Updates at top.

As I said, the drives are not reliable - how could it be when it is superslim and vertically installed where any inserted media can easily shift by 1/1000th inch/cm/whatever. If no media works in it (CD, DVD, blank, commercial/movie), then I'd blame the drive. The arm directing the media to its spot may be broke or the drive failing. What helps (with any drive) is to set the burn at the absolute slowest speed available. Try cleaning the drive and testing with various media; can also take it to your nearest Apple store to have them check it. If it is the drive, I'd recommend replacing it with an external drive.
