iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

Just putting this out there for those searching for the same issue...

There is currently a bug in iOS 9 that prevents the on-screen volume indicator from being displayed on-screen when the device is wakened from sleep using the Smart Cover/Smart Case. The volume buttons still do in fact adjust the volume as they should, but there is no on-screen volume indicator that shows the volume and it's adjustment level. The workaround is to sleep the device again, but waken it using the Sleep/Wake switch rather than the Smart Cover...or simply wake the device using the Sleep/Wake switch in the first place. This has been tested on two iPad mini 2's and an iPad Air 2.

AM having this same exact problem. It's a pain having to sleep the device every time I open the Smart Cover. I like using my Smart Cover for the ease and to protect the screen. I've sent in a report a bug to Apple so I'm hoping this gets enough attention for them to address it. Im not the only one who's having this problem as I've been contacted by a few people. Do you notice when you close your Smart Cover it is making a different clicking noise from before the ios9 update. Im getting a low single click rather than the loud double click as before.

If the case has the ability to lock/unlock the device by using a compatible magnetic sensor, I doubt the brand would make a difference.

Or choose a case without the ability to Lock / Unlock the device (no magnetic sensor in the case).

You can de-select the Lock / Unlock feature under Settings but of course, then the "smart" feature of the Smart Cover will be disabled but the volume icon will reappear since the cover is not being used to Lock / Unlock the device.

You can also setup the device to use a passcode which also "corrects" the volume indicator bug since you are not using the Smart Cover to actually Lock / Unlock the device...the passcode is being used to do it.

I Just wonder why a small percentage, like us, have this problem. Not everybody has this, so what is the cause? I have Ipad mini2 and Air 2, both having the same issue. When will a next update come? 1 month? 2 months? Or longer? And will it be fixed by then? SIGH......don't call an Apple center...they will reply : Huh? Never heard of this problem. Yeah, right .

Like I mentioned earlier in a couple of posts (I believe), if you enable the passcode option on the device, the device's volume icon shows just fine after opening the Smart Cover, then entering the passcode. No, this is not a fix, nor a valid reason to actually be using a passcode but it's a valid workaround until Apple decides to fix this annoying issue. Maybe they think everybody uses a passcode on their devices that remain in the home and see it as a non-issue. Whatever the reason is, I keep reporting the issue but as mentioned and reported by others here, it has still not been resolved since iOS 9.0 (that introduced this bug) was released.

I've pretty much lost all hope that this will ever be resolved...yet still I report it. It's all we can do.

You can report it all you want...maybe they will get the message and fix it. But at this point, I'm really beginning to doubt that. There's a different long-standing bug (on-screen keyboard keys don't highlight correctly when tapped if you have "increase contrast" enabled) that began with iOS 7. This has to this day, never been corrected either and I've reported it at every single iOS update since then...😐
