The easiest way I have found is to download a free EXIF editor such as http://www.colorpilot.com/exif.html
Plug the phone in, open the EXIF editor and using the editor, browse to the Folder containing the photos that are tagged as "Selfies"
Select one of the photos and in the right hand pane of the editor, you'll see a tab that says "EXIF". Click that and a whole stack of data about the photo appears. The two relevant fields are under "Lens" and are at the bottom of the "Lens" data block. One refers to the F-stop and will be a series of figures .... double click that and it will come up with a block that shows 2.15mm (lot more figures but the first 4 are 2.15). Delete the tag.
Next tag is the very last tag in the Lens data block and will identify the lens used - in this case it will say "iPhone 6 (or whatever model) Front camera" - delete this tag.
Your "selfie" has now disappeared from the selfie folder as the iPhone no longer identifies it as a selfie
Note to Apple - please give US, the customers, control over how photos are managed and stored ......
The problem with deleting is I can't delete a picture from the Selfies folder. There is no option to remove or delete. I would need to delete it from the phone. I want it on the phone but ONLY in a folder for the person who sent it to me. This feature is VERY bad.
This feature is VERY bad.
Send a feature request to Apple, like OT recommended. The more feedback is sent, the more likely it will be that apple will add an option to hide albums we do not want in our Photos Libraries.
I can delete from the Selfies album:
1 - tap on the image you want to delete.
and the option to delete is presented in the window:
and will be deleted from the My Photo Stream in the process.
If you're not able to do that maybe your library is damage and needs to be repaired. These screenshot are from iOS 9.0.2 on an iPhone 5s.
Yes it works but only because you delete them all from your phone. I want to keep them in folders but not in the Selfie folder.
Until Apple sees fit to allow that you'll have to learn to ignore them in the Selfies folder.
I completely agree. Albums should be for items that you want to access faster from the photo menu. I have no need for a "selfies" or "front camera" album. I hope this change is made soon.
I agree too. I would appreciate the option to delete these albums. I don't wish to sort my photos this way, and this just makes it more difficult to find the photos because of the cluttered screen.
I'd also like the option to delete some of the built in apps that I don't use.
Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.
Nope ... did not work. No option to put "selfie" photos in the trash even after moving them to another folder.

Select any photo in the Selfie album or any album and press the key combination command-delete ⌘⌫ . That will delete them from your photos library.

Go to this site.. add that respective photo which shows in your selfies album..
There is an option to remove the metadata from the photo and then save the photo into your photos app and sync to your phone. ( remove the original photo)
The photo wont show in the selfies album.
This worked for a couple of my photos but not all of them. Apparently the exif data or the front-camera mode is not the only thing that places some photos in the selfies album. This "feature" is a drag.
That's a silly suggestion. We know how to delete a photo from the library. What we want is to keep the photo but delete it from the unwanted selfies album. If that album is empty it won't be a distraction on the phone.
You'll have to learn to ignore the Selfies album until Apple makes a change, if they ever do.

What we really need on iOS is the ability to create our own smart albums, like we could in iPhoto iOS. Then Apple would not have to clutter up our iOS devices with predefined smart albums that we do not want.
