Stuck key on 12 inch Macbook keyboard

I wonder if anyone can help me. The "i" key on the keyboard of my 12 inch Macbook is sticking. It does not have the same "click" or tactile feedback that the other keys have. I try to keep the keyboard clean and free of crumbs, dust, etc, however something just doesn't seem right. Is there a safe way to remedy the problem myself?

Thanks!

Chris

I have long been a fan of Apple products. WTS, my journey with the 2016 and 2017 MBP/Butterfly keyboard has not been fun. MY solution, after giving Apple many...many..... many chances on repair.. and even replacement.. and even a new one off the shelf (too many.. and our time is valuable) I have come to the conclusion, for me, that the only solution was to purchase a 2015 refurbished MBP 13”. I considered the Air but I cannot do the screen. Something is up with these Butterfly keyboards, including the repair or them.

My CR was wonderful. She was as much help as anyone could ever ask for.... but no one can overcome a hardware issue that cannot be resolved due to repair depot having equally bad parts.

That is my $0.02.

Just came back from authorized service provider (I'm in Russia, so no Genius Bar for third world country capitals, right?), has been waiting repair for 10 days to get it back in the same faulty state with note: it flawlessly passed some magic test. And that's it.

But top right corner on my 'X' key still doesn't work.
You gotta be kidding me Apple?

What happens if my mac is out of warranty - mine is 17 months old - same issue on 4 keys in the same area - feels unjust that I need to pay for a manufacturing/design fault - do we know if this is rectified on the new models of macbook / or pro as I don't feel like paying to fix this or paying to have a new one with the same issues - could this be the time to return to PC ?

I also have an early macbook 12" that is now almost useless. The space bar, left shift and 'e' key no longer function. The space bar is physically off the laptop and I have tried to find a replacement key but there is nothing in stock. I did replace the 'e' key successfully but the shift key only worked for a few days. I called Apple repair and it would cost about $500 to repair it. For me that is hard to swallow, but it is also hard to have a 2 year old Apple laptop that is junk. I still have a perfectly working first generation macbook aluminum so this is very disappointing to me. What is more frustrating is I see many articles and complaints but Apple only seems to offer an expensive repair. I really hope they step up and fix this issue or I might have to give up on them.

We had the same problem with our MacBook keys sticking. It wasn’t even a month old when the shift, spacebar and return keys starting sticking. We had brought the computer in two times to have several of the keys repaired while it was still under warrenty They just kept replacing the individual keys. I know that it was not an issue with dust and dirt getting under the keys, because I have a silicone keyboard cover. There are serious hardware issues with the butterfly keys. Now my MacBook is no longer under warranty and the A key is getting stuck. I took it back to see if they would repair it as this has been an on-going issue since the first month that I purchased the computer, but they refuse to cover the cost of repairing the keyboard. I was advised to pay several hundreds of dollars to have they keyboard replaced. I am so incredibly disappointed in Apple’s customer service and the lack of quality in their products. My previous Macbook Pro lasted seven years without an issues. I have heard that people are having similar issues with the MacBook Pro’s that have butterfly keys. I would advise anyone considering buying a MacBook or MacBook Pro to look at another company other than Apple, or wait until Apple fixes the horrible butterfly keys.

Same here. Apple makes some shoddy hardware and then it’s the customer’s problem.

Very similar with the first generation retina displays with defective screen coating.

This butterfly keyboard needs to be replaced with something else. On the previous generation machines I never had a stuck key once in more than three years.

The new macbook keyboard is a dud. Too many problems. More so than previous issues on older models like faulty retina displays, GPUs detaching from logic board due to environmentally friendly lead free solder...😂

I'm on my third macbook now, this third one having been owned for a year now so out of warranty. I have a $400 HP laptop from 2007 that's been running fine since purchase. I have a 2011 13" macbook pro that has been running fine since purchase ($1800). My $4000 2011 15" macbook pro was unusable for 3 years though due to the AMD GPU soldering issue and it wasn't until Apple admitted the problem 3 years later and issued a free fix or replacement that I could then use it again, but by this stage it is now outdated 😂

This latest generation of macbooks will be slow and outdated before Apple admits fault and makes them usable again!

The real issue I find is Apple arrogantly treats its customers like they are wrong, for years, then admit the exact fault everyone was complaining about and issue fixes then.

How about honouring your customers now with either replacement models or a free upgrade to a macbook with a working keyboard 😂

Apple CEOs would scoff at such a thought, but here I am scoffing at them for thinking they can waste $2000+ of my money on dodgy engineering and lies.

When their hardware does work their software has also taken a nosedive in quality and usability.

Apples solution: Extend the touch bar in to a full touch surface. Now none of the buttons are real! The trackpad isn’t real! Apple customer complaints and hardware faults aren’t real!!! 😂

And what’s the bet with a full touch ‘keyboard’ there will still be no touch screen like iOS.

Samehere, stickey space bar return key andshift key. Itspainfulto try to work with a productso shoddy asmyexpensiveMacbook. <-And this is a good sentence example. Iwasjust about to order a newMBPbut nowreading that the keyboard is the same,Iamnot investing again for a 4th laptopfromApple. My MacBookisout of warranty, but just before it went out a year ago,Ihad the keyboard replaced...andnowbasically a year after, this is my typing life.

BacktoDellIguess.

Try to get it fixed under warranty. If it's not under warranty you likely need to carefully remove the key and clean around it. You could try using a tooth pick to clean around the edgers first before removing the key. After removing the key try rubbing alcohol on a qtip. Be careful, this keyboard and the mechanisms under the keys are very fragile. It is poorly designed and prone to this problem.

"Genius" design, the $700 keyboard.

I had to take my 2015 version back 3 times to have the keyboard fixed. It would only last about 4 months of continuous use. Recently upgraded to the 2017 version as this keyboard was supposed to be an upgraded version and same issue after 6 months. I just got mine back and they had to replace the whole bottom of the laptop. Works wonderfully again but there is definitely a design issue with the new butterfly keyboard that Apple should acknowledge and fix for anyone that has it even if beyond warranty period. It should be created as a recall program like they have done for other issues. Paid a lot of money for this device and it should last more than 6 months.

Update: thanks to being on an Apple Care program I have got my top case exchanged, that is, they replaced the keyboard, trackpad and speakers in one piece (at least that's what I've been told). Of course, now everything works fine. Let's see how long that will last.

The repair service admitted that with the 2016 MacBook Pros there are rising issues with the keyboard, interestingly not as much with the 2015 onward MacBooks. Hence they got me the second generation keyboard.

Petty, that the formerly sturdy hardware is currently not as reliantly anymore.
