iTunes 12.3.0.44 does not recognize connected iPad or iPhone

After upgrading to latest version of iTunes (12.3.0.44) 64bit, it no longer recognizes the iPhone or the iPad, when I connect them to the PC. I use Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 3, and have not had this problem in the previous version of iTunes.

Does anyone see the same problem, or has anyone a good suggestion on how to solve the problem?

I just purchased a new laptop for my wife, and we were not able to see her iPhone in iTunes 12. The usual diagnostics are:

1) Check the cable -- works fine with the iPhone on a Macbook, no problem here

2) Check whether the device is visible in Windows 10 -- able to access iPhone disk from File Manager, device listed as "Apple iPhone"

3) Check whether iPhone is using Apple Mobile Device USB Driver -- FAILED, device was loaded with a Microsoft driver and therefore inaccessible in iTunes.

SOLUTION: follow directions under Manually Update Apple Mobile USB Device Driver from the following Apple Support page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204095.

Device is now visible in iTunes.

regards,

Len
