Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

@Csound. all,due respect you post a lot.,but does it matter if it was bad coding or sunspots? the problem seems from the outpouring of conversation and AppleCare Tier 2's input that it began with iOS 9. i never had this with any previous iOS.

ALso where do you draw the line? This issue might not effect every user, but in my observation, I'm finding it intermittent and thus hard to know the troubleshooting circumstances. as with most intermittent issues, feel has a part and I feel that the issue may occur when an email is downloaded to multiple devices or computers. im thinking it may be if I download on my iPad which leaves the original on server, then download on my Mac Pro which does delete off server on dnld and then I can't see the entir message on iPad as if the POP email didnt dnld in the first place and was acting more like IMAP and when the original POP was deleted off server, iPad couldn't find the original again.

THis is is making more observational sense, but I can easily troubleshoot this scenario and will hopefully later today.

but your point about every user, in this case is problematic, because it doesn't even effect those that report having the problem every time. So since the perfect storm is needed, I bet there are users who don't know the problem is lurking for them.

I won't believe it's fixed unless/until it actually works -- consistently -- in the general release version. Just because it works (today) in a Beta version doesn't mean it will still work tomorrow (even in the same version) or in the release version.

This isn't the first time, even in recent years, that some change like this has led me (or forced me) to change how I handle things like email, and I doubt it will be the last. I'm just glad I've never had to depend on it for anything important.

If we were Level 5 with 20,000 Points would you and Csound1 take us more seriously?

The facts are: There are at least 7 discussions open regarding this issue. (7226924, 7221489, 7226501, 7227219, 7230143, 7274551, 7284200). There are more than 150,000 views of those discussions. There are articles in the press regarding this issue. It all started around the same time and coincides with the update to iOS 9. Many of us have contacted Apple Support with no resolution. I personally have talked to Apple twice and was escalated to a senior engineer. No resolution.

I switched to Outlook for iOS one month ago and I have not had a problem since then. Apple changed something in their mail App in OS 9. If it is not a bug, then it is a feature that breaks email in certain configurations.

I would hope that folks like you and Csound1 would use you contacts at Apple to at least make them aware that there are a lot of unhappy users out there who have not been able to resolve this issue even after working with Apple Support.

I totally agree with steve. This episode has seriously undermined Apple's image.

I believe there were two issues which overlaid each other and complicated the effect:

1. the roll out of El Capitan which caused disruption to how emails were held on devices (emails were mixed up between myself and wife's accounts)

2. the roll out of iOS 9 which messed up POP accounts (basically).

Apple seriously need to review and revise their methods of dealing with issues like this. We are the customers and they have a duty of care to ensure that the software is reasonably bug free before roll out. This failure has cost many of us a lot of time and in some cases money.

I myself have solved the problem (in case anyone wants to know). I have ditched Apple Mail on my iMac and am now using Thunderbird which doesn't mess up. I no longer access email from my ipad and will not do so until I am assured by Apple that the problem is solved. This make my iPad very limited in use - I could be claiming compensation for the purchase of a product which is now not fit for purpose. Think about it Apple!

THank you. One last test would be to leave the device off-line overnight - and verify that email content isn't deleted or becomes inaccessible when checked (still off-line) the following day. At present, downloaded graphic or attachment content can vanish over a period of hours.

Providing the reported changes make it into the eventual GA release, then the prospect of a definitive fix may soon be upon us. Hopefully iOS9.2 will be released soon - and then those affected by the fault will be as happy as the "flat-earth" society. Sorry - I'm unsure if that'like translate well into German.😉

Thank you for your response. I understand your position. However, even though you personally are not experiencing this issue, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. There seems to be a substantial number of customers who are having the exact same issue caused by a very specific event/update. I guess we wait to see if Apple does anything about it. Best regards

the following was posted by a Level 7 user in this thread: Re: After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

  • There is a bug in the iOS 9, 9.0.1, 9.0.2 and 9.1 mail app that does not save messages on the device except in temporary storage.
  • This bug affects ALL email account types, not just POP, but it's more serious with POP because that's the only protocol that does sync to saved messages on the server.
  • Apple has responded to reports of this bug and said they will fix it.

I. Is an opinion

2. Is wrong, POP does not sync to server, IMAP (and Exchange do)

3. We'll see won't we.

Just the messenger. Best to discuss his opinion directly with your fellow Level Seven user.

My opinion...There is an issue that affects some users...Customers who were happy and now are not happy because something changed when IOS9 was released.

Coding or magic, again, a matter of opinion.

Meanwhile, the thread contains advice and solutions from users who are affected on how they have mitigated or dealt with the impact.
